Cardiff Fixed Gear

Posted on
  • Just moved back to Cardiff for my second year of uni... I've tried looking for a sub-forum but the only thing I could find was www.fixedgearcardiff.com which seems to be down.

    So... anyone around?

also, I seem to be getting pretty weird looks riding fixed round roath :/ ... But the taxis are nicer here :D

  • At least Cardiff is relatively flat for riding fixed. Carms & Pembs can be a bit more, errr, ....challenging.
Have you been down to Newport for a few laps of the velodrome yet?

  • i'm just about to move to cardiff, from cheltenham, for the first year of archaeology at cardiff uni. Would be well up for meeting fellow fixed cyclists.

  • Tried to cycle to philly the other day... my god those hills! My london legs need some training! I was thinking of checking out the maindy track before, only because i haven't been on a velodrome before and I won't have my car come october so getting there could be a bit of a mission!
Info on the maindy track seems sketchy though... not sure if anyone from here has given it a go?
Watched someone do a trackstand opposite me on albany road for a good two minutes the other night. There must be a few more?!

Awesome! I was thinking of getting a society together if i can find the numbers!
Where are you gonna be staying in cardiff?

  • colum road i think it is

  • Hey
This last year we've just started Cardiff Uni road group (http://curct.co.uk/)
we've been running for a year, but this september we're fully affiliated and have funding from the uni.

There are regular rides during the week, along Newport flats.
Longer rides on the weekend such as Barry/Llantwit Major.
On Wednesdays we are usually at Maindy track for a couple of hours.
This year there will be spin classes too.

There are only a few of us who ride fixies/track bikes, though im keen to get some fixed rides going, as i usualy do my own training.

    Facebook group: https://www.facebook.com/groups/CardiffRC/

hopefully see you around Cardiff in a few weeks

  • Hey buddy, I just left Cardiff after spending three years there, there's a group of fixed riders who ride out from st mary's st on friday evenings... Fixed fridays... I'll link you the facebook. Sound group of guys, I ride a dave russell track/pinarello road and might be popping back for the weekend so come say hi. I'll be back in a years time for 4th/5th year anyway.

  • Cheers. look forward to checking it out.

  • Cheers! I'll definitely be joining that society...
Had a pretty rough crash last night by the bay so if I feel up to it friday, I'll try to check it out!
If anyone sees a guy riding a black and yellow fuji-track, say hi!

  • colum road i think it is

Oh cool, Heard it's a pretty decent place to live! hit me up on here once you're in cardiff if you wanna go for a night-ride (preferably post-freshers! haha)

  • Ahh Cardiff - cool place. Used to live there and would move back if it wasn't for lack of jobs.

  • 'Taster sessions' on Newport Velodrome are ideal for first timers and only cost a tenner including bike hire for an hour and you get a qualified coach for the whole session. Group size is around 10 or 12 max, but I did one once and only two of us turned up! Brilliant value.
The 'drome is a couple of miles from Newport railway station, so not a massive problem to get there from Cardiff if you jump on the train. There's probably a bus from the station to the track, but I can't confirm this is the case.

  • I'm also off to Cardiff uni in 2 weeks!
Was wondering if you are allowed to store bikes in halls? Road bike, track and CX? In shennghetto halls if that makes any difference.
Would be good to meet up with you guys!

You're not supposed to bring bikes into your halls (although they don't say anything about large, bike sized bags ;))... Usually there are places the lock your bike up somewhere near. I was in catrwright (aka the biggest let down of first year) and we had a locked room where you could lock your bike up in... only problem was that only a few of us had keys to even get in the room so you'd end up ringing on flats to see if anyone had a key... #CoolestOfStories

Sounds tidy, I'll be coming down sharpish then!

  • I'll be coming down soon too. I'd be up for a meet
