Would an old t-shirt or clean towel do instead of blanket?

Yes.
Cat will be lying on anything lying around soon anyway - depending what the sun is shining on.

I found blue blankets were most appreciated;
domestic cats have poor colour vision with reduced ability to see shades of red and green, maybe it's that.
