• ha.. i think it is - looks ok but will probably go into condor to ask them to have a look

  • Monday morning (2nd Sept) I cycled to work in the anticipation of taking part in the LCC Space for Cycling protest ride later that day. It was the first time cycling the 20 mile route since moving house. I used to cycle 10 miles each way so was comfortable with the distance.

Around 7 miles in at approx 7.30am going at 18mph, on the A21 Bromley Road close to the Catford Junction, I was hit by a van pulling out of Canadian Avenue. He was crossing my lane to go southbound on the A21. There were no cars around, but 2 cyclists a few metres ahead of me, so I thought he saw me. In that few metres gap, he pulled out, I had no time to react and the front of the van hit the side of the bike, sending me flying and rolling onto the tarmac. He was extremely apologetic but I was too in shock to respond.

Amazingly I only have bruises from the bike hitting me and grazes from the fall, no sight of blood. Policeman on a motorbike was close by and took details of driver and a witness. Ambulance took me to A&E to get checked over and xray on right ankle which was clear. There is bruising above and below the ankle. Other than a few other minor bruises, I feel fine.

    The bike?

    • Front wheel is not running true, back wheel (not even 2 weeks old) running true but not in line with the bike.
    • Left crank arm bent inwards it cant rotate fully as it hits the chain stay. This is what the van hit.

    • Top tube is cracked

    • Seat is moved out of line and ripped at the edge.
    • Crack in helmet

I now slightly dread the admin work with claiming on his insurance. Just what I needed a few days before my birthday.

  • See the solicitors we like thread. Ojeffcott will do all the work for you.

Good luck and heal up fast

  • I won't lie, it's a lot of admin, but it's worth it. Hope you feel better soon!

  • sorry he might be, but he hit you, so couldn't agree more with these guys about getting a solicitor on board. If you have no previous injuries and the driver fessed up then it should be fairly straight forward, no?

  • If you use a solicitor they do all the admin

  • Even with a solicitor there's still a lot of things you have to do.

Document events, document costs incurred due to accident, document injuries, see an appointed physician if you want to make an injury based claim, speak to police to get police crime reference from them attending, etc etc

  • ^^ Bad luck and HTFU

I came here to post my story about crashing into a dog this morning in Dulwich Park. Seems hopelessly trivial now.

  • But funnier, do share.

  • Oh that was really it. I crashed into a dog. Everyone apologised to everyone involved, there may have been a handshake, it was all terribly British.

And completely my fault of course.

  • Was the dog ok??

  • Aye, it was fine - I've somehow managed to strain a groin muscle in the melee but everyone was otherwise unscathed.

  • Was your bike okay?

  • I was on the way to my LBS as the drive train was making a weird noise. The weird noise got a bit worse. LBS changed the freewheel and the chain, but weird noise remains. I think I will find it difficult to prove any canine crash causation.

  • I'm struggling to picture this at the current level of detail.

    Please advise:

    Precise location
    Direction and speed of travel
    Breed and colour of dog

    Thanks

  • Perhaps I could draw it for you?

  • The rider down forum if for Road Traffic Incidents.
This conversation would be better placed in the Draw your own collisions thread.

  • Cyclist knocked down by a BT van on Portland St (se17) this morning about 9.40. If you're on here hope you're ok and just scratches and bruises. I was the cyclist that stopped to make sure the driver wasn't being a dick and made everyone swap details, but then stoopidly didn't give you mine.. If the driver changes his mind about his responsibility (I can't imagine he'll try) then PM me.

  • Perhaps I could draw it for you?

    If you would, thanks.

  • Hi everyone, I'm new here.

I was knocked off my bike this morning on Hackney Road, E2, London. I was hit from the side by a driver coming from a side road joining oncoming traffic. I was overtaking a traffic jam and she popped through a gap on the left and hit me on my left side.

I'm not hurt but my bike is buggered in a few places. I called a accident solicitors but they said they could only help if I was personally injured. I called the police straight away and got a crime reference number. She refused to accept responsibility claiming I shouldn't be overtaking the traffic. What should I do, how can I get reimbursed for the damage to my bike?

    Thanks, any advise much appreciated.

  • Glad you're ok.

Have a read here: What to do in case of an accident.

Might I suggest a look here too. Filtering, even on the outside of traffic, holds its own set of dangers, not least of which traffic joining from side roads.

  • Hit by a cab from behind this morning.

Got details, but failed to get a witness like the idiot I am.

Big thing I've noticed from my extensive photos is that he has altered his front number plate with black tape, I know which is the correct one from his TFL licensed taxi plate, and from speaking to his broker, but it's very illegal. WAC

  • did your beard cushion your fall?

hope you're ok dude and he gets what's coming to him.

  • What actually happened? From the photos, the cabs wheels are straight ahead and you have a rear light on, unless you somehow swerved out in front of him, seems pretty damning on his part.

  • He drove into the back of me. Nothing else. I don't understand it either.

No falling, GPS logs reckon I was doing 18km/h but slowing and he's just rammed me from behind, got my wheel stuck under his cab and that's forced us both to a stop.
