JRD, like Rob English, seem to get a pass for being interesting even when they aren't pretty

Really?

I didn't say all Rob's bikes look weird, just that the weird ones seem to get a pass.

They do tho.
No, EGS Up Cage

Either a work of genius or the product of a deranged mind - maybe both. There was a sequential shifter to go with it which operated both dérailleurs of a 3×9 system through only the useful gearsI only get poor marketing as a reason for failure from this? Sorry if I missed something?

I bet it cost twice the price of XTR and shifted worse, even in 1999.
It does prefigure ideas whose time has (or nearly has) come
1: Looks a bit like Shadow RDs
2: Reduced chain slap, just like SRAM Type 2
3: Sequential shifting from one controller - has been done as a Di2 hack, wouldn't be surprised to see Shimano implementing it formally when XTR goes Di2 2×11but many inventors of cycling components have been before their time and disappeared without trace

sequential shifting would be amazing

I appreciate the craft and design details of the English and JRD bikes. Take JRD's front derailleur .. there are negatives, like you can't adjust the height for another chainring size being the most obvious, but that was pure custom work. I like seeing different things - even if it's for difference sake - much more interesting then another OTP cookie cutter Moots build ..

you can't adjust the height for another chainring size
It's as adjustable as any other brazed on FD

I think you maybe not familiar with my example ..

I thought we were still talking about the P-R bike above

Mathematically speaking you were...

Spinergys are automatic anti-porn, even if the rest of the build is good, but I know how hard it is to find a decent looking 196 since the Ergostem comes out as equivalent to about 150mm if you don't fold it up like that
-
• #79316
kg196 and ergostem are closely related.
-
• #79317
Obviously, but I think Look made a mistake in marrying the 3-link ergostem to the external steerer fork, becasue it places the first pivot about 25-30mm further from the steering axis than it was with the quill and AHead ergostems.
The L96 shows how it should have been, using multiple choices of extension rather than having one set of parts to deal with both height and reach adjustment

As I said, FC-5700 (or 5600, if there are any left) with the USE ring.
Martyn Irvine was using this exact setup when he won the scratch race national championship today. (IDK if he was on the same yesterday when he won the pursuit, and it looks like he was using the same when he won the scratch race at worlds, but I cant get a clear picture). Just so you know it's good enough for world champions.

so a hollowtech 2 crank and BB will give an ok chainline?

chainring is bent mate.

Won't stop you becoming world champion.
