It was quite a good way to do it so you ended up with a main party cottage, games/whiskey, and a more chilled/those who wanted to go to bed cottage.
We found it tough to finding one space which could sleep lots of people. Also most places we looked at needed to be rented for a week. We did see a wicked place in some sort of converted castle near Bristol... I'll see if I can find a link.
Other things to consider:
nail attendees down early and get money off them asap.
car spaces - if lots are driving there is often a limit on how many cars you can have.
Sound system - a mate puts on nights so brought proper speakers down, the ones there were just ipod dock things so not really up to proper party standards.
get a kitty and buy food for meals
draw up a rough plan if you're there for a few days otherwise it gets a bit aimless.
source local pubs before you go (if you're there for a couple of days)

Me and my mate got a group of cottages for a joint birthday/NYE in Kent: http://pilgrimsnook.co.uk/
