Is this purely for the looks?

If not just put some clear nail polish on there to stop it flaking off further.
I've just applied some nail polish to affected areas as a temporary coat. I am thinking of getting some touch ups in the future because I think the paint scheme on this frame looks too good for it to be ruined by a couple of scratches.
