I really can't afford to buy anything - wonder if I could get a bike from work and jam some stuff in the freehub pawls to make it fixed? Then bodge everything else?

You don't need to have a fixed gear for polo. In fact, almost noone uses fixed any more. The only real advantage is in goal and when you're stuck in a corner
