Finally got the lowdown on 653 the other day just for anyone who is interested.

Although we don't have staff in the office now from around that time, Terry
Bill (worked here ~ 48 years until 2010) did tell me that Eddy Merckx wanted
more compliance in the front triangle, and less in the rear stays. So 653
had 753 heat-treated stays, and a 531 front triangle. I think Indurain also
used 653.
Because 753 was heat-treated and at that time few builders had used this
kind of material, the tubing had to be silver brazed into lugs.531 could be
fillet brazed or silver soldered . So I would guess that accounts for the 2
methods used on the frame mentioned.
