120mm SS cassette hubs?

Posted on
  • Hi all,

Been lurking for a while and have just got my first fixie/ss, a Fuji feather. Really please with it, just riding fixie at the mo as have no freewheel. Plan to use the bike for my 17.5 mile each way commute eventually and want to change a few bits.

First thing is going to SS, I'm really interested in finding a SS freewheel cassette type hub, preferably something like 12t and SS only (no flip flop). Don't suppose anyone had any suggestions of what to look at? Can't find anything other than some BMX specific bits yet.

Also the other alternative is a white industries freewheel? But if I'm spending that much I'd rather build up a wheel set.

    Thanks for any help!

  • the thing you are looking for exists but my head is going to explode trying to remember the manufacturer. if it comes to my mind, i'll let you know asap...

  • Sorry for my ignorance but... Why not just by a standard freewheel and put it on a flip flop track hub where you could even have two freewheels?

  • ^^ that. ^ and this.

    A question answered (albeit with another question) right at the top of Profile's product page;

*"Have a track frame you want to make into a single speed, and really hate freewheels?"

*I've been running a traditional 120mm SS setup (Shimano SF-MX30 on Formula Double Track hub) for only a few weeks now, and can already see why anyone who rides SS full-time might want something that doesn't sound like two midgets engaged in a ping-pong rally inside their freewheel. When I coast, it's smooth, silent and really fast. When I pedal, I wonder what the fuck's going on in there.
WI Freewheels are great if you're absolutely sure what size you want. For the rest of us, the arrival of a cassette SS hub is just common sense.

  • Shimano ones are usually relatively quiet, we sell a lot of them and people seem to be happy with em.

  • Truth be told, I can't hear the ping-pong in traffic. As soon as I'm off the beaten track though, it sounds gash.
Cassettes and freehubs make sense to me. In my limited experience they last a lot longer than freewheels.

  • Thanks, yup I know the simple solution is just to stick a freewheel on but I would like a SS dedicated cassette rear hub (not cassette with spacers etc), does anyone use one or know of any that are suitable?

The WI one would be ok as I know I at least want 16t but its like £70-80 and it would be much nicer to go for a new hub, then keep a set of fixie wheels and a set of SS.

  • Is the Profile Racing link invisible to you or something? That's your product, right there. Hope/CK/WI quality. What more are you after?

  • Jeebus, arsey at 7:00 in the morning already!

    Thanks for link, any alternatives?

  • could you not just use any BMX cassette hub and space it to 120mm?

edit - although you might struggle to find a BMX driver big enough for the gearing you want to run.

The Profile hub, which seems to be the only option.. will cost over £200 http://www.profileracing.com/estore/product.php?productId=110

Just get a WI freewheel..its what i use, and its great :D (managed to get one on here for £40 as well, so price wasn't so scary)

  • £40 second hand I suppose?

  • yeh, but barely used
