OLF..... can you give me ring on 07758 786036 sometime tomorrow afternoon please.
I can not! I'd have to use a payphone.
I am unsure if I can get to Polo tomorrow evening due to business committments, and it was suggested last week at the AlleyCat that we are changing the court that we play on, to another floodlit court that is not used as much as the Sloughbottom court .... in fact if anyone else who wants to play Polo, please give me a shout regarding this.
BTW, the Pololoaner is an old BSO MTB (the same as mine) that has been converted to a crude SS Polo hack with a two-into-one brake lever. However, one of the other guys will probabaly let you have a go on a fixie.
Regards
Gareth
What about on Vauxhall Street - I'm not sure if they get much use in the evenings... I live nearby and will keep an eye on them at times after 6.30 or so. Some people play basketball there but mainly not in the courts/pitches themselves.
In any case, keep us updated and I'll come along one evening.

Hey guys, we're having a 24 hour single player tournament in Cambridge in a weeks time. Would be great if some of you could make it down. More info in the main Bike Polo thread and a bit in the Cambridge section too.

Greetings to all,
Our little Polo gang sort of disbanded over the winter.
With changes in personal circumstances, job changes, and relocations, etc . only a couple of us are now available, so it would be nice start up playing polo one evening each week again now that spring is here with one, two or few new local faces.
Equipment is no problem as I have spare mallets and balls etc, and one spare polo hack for loan.
If you are interested in having a knock about can you contact me: cargo-cycles@live.co.uk or 07758 786036
Regards
Gareth

Really keen to get this started up again.
I emailed Gareth above a while ago to check what the current scene was like and he said it's pretty non-existent. How many of your original players are still about? Would appreciate some advice on who might still be interested.
I don't mind starting a Facebook group and help spreading the word but in the past have found that approach to be unsuccessful in the long run. The polo that I started in Essex only lasted for a few months, partly due to using that method of organisation. I also used to play in Birmingham for 3 years and their system works well - get everybody to sign in to the forum each week and put their name down on a list if they can play, that way they know if there will be enough players and whether it's worth turning up. This pretty much eliminates demoralising low turnouts

Stu, if you get any responses, please let people know about the beginners tournament in westway on September 15th. Be good to have some representation beyond the M25.

I would love to play, but have never even tried polo, and don't really run an acceptable gearing!

Then you like I need to find a shitty bike to make ino a polo beast.
Considering a lopro polo bike the minute ha ha. -
• #387
I've got a few frames and bits knocking around that I wouldn't want a lot for if anyone needs anything
-
• #388
I really can't afford to buy anything - wonder if I could get a bike from work and jam some stuff in the freehub pawls to make it fixed? Then bodge everything else?
-
• #389
i don't think it'll be srs enough to need a hardcore polo bike, just run what you brung as they say in drag racing

Was talking to Dandy Matt about this earlier, he's thinking of putting a team together - so far it's him, a guy called Tom that I don't know, possibly myself, and we need another? Rikki? Surely we should have enough for at least three/four teams between us all?
-
• #392
four players per team? what size is the court?
-
• #393
No idea, never played before, I'm just going on what's on the poster above^^^^^^

I'm probably up for this.
I can convert my winter mtb. I just need some 26 inch slick tyres, holdfast type pedal straps and a short 25.4mm 1.1/8" A head stem. The court looks quite small on streetview and non fenced:

Fixed/5 speed rear, 17 tooth cog, Normandy Hubs, a little out of true, 37c tires with less than 10 miles use, £50 or the Tyres and Tubes on their own for £10. Tubes have Shrader valves so need bigger rim holes.
The 1in A head stem and quill adaptor are also for sale: http://malbuc.100webcustomers.com/benpics/forsale/bikeparts.htm -

You don't need to have a fixed gear for polo. In fact, almost noone uses fixed any more. The only real advantage is in goal and when you're stuck in a corner
