    BRITISH FINAL RACES INTO COVENTRY

The 2013 British Cycle Speedway final races into Coventry this Bank Holiday Monday – and will be the biggest ever event in the history of the sport in the city.

The super banked Hearsall Common, Earlsdon, track will be transformed for the day. A huge mobile grandstand, toilets, a large LED video screen and other infrastructure will all be in place for a showpiece 62nd staging of the championships.

Over a thousand spectators will be present, with hundreds of Coventry families expected to join the crowds for an exciting and free Bank Holiday Monday afternoon out. The Lord Mayor of Coventry, Councillor Gary Crookes, and the leader of the City Council, Councillor Ann Lucas, will be in attendance as official guests.

The Coventry Festival Band will perform shortly before the start, classically trained soloist Carrie-Ann Williams from Cheshire will sing the national anthem live and the Crew Promotions cheerleaders will provide interval entertainment.

The final, sponsored by international company Schwalbe Tyres, will be filmed for transmission on Sky Sports and will be shown in 32 countries around the world, reaching a global audience of 210 million homes.

It marks a remarkable return to the big time for the community based Coventry Cycle Speedway club, which has staged an astonishing revival after being defunct for four years after a row with the sports administrators in 2007.

The club, which is mostly run by parents of the clubs` many junior riders, have restored the Hearsall Common track to its former glory. The senior team have currently won ten of their last twelve matches, including away wins at Sheffield and London.

Volunteers from the club have been at Hearsall Common all this week putting the finishing touches to the track and surrounds. The club plan to stage the final in a professional and glitzy way in which will give the best possible impression of the city.

Helped by the national boom in Cycling, the club now have more riders than since its formation in 1978. They run a successful weekly Club Night for new juniorriders, taking scores of local Coventry kids off the streets and providing an exciting and healthy off-road racing experience.

The action on Bank Holiday Monday will commence at 12 mid day with the staging oft he Woman’s final, with Lauren Davies of Leicester the hot favourite. The Leicester flyer incredibly rides in the Leicester first team and beats many male counterparts in team competition.

Hull superstar, double British champion Andy Angell, will be going for a hat-trick of wins in the blue ribband Mens final (starting at 3pm), the most prestigious title in Cycle Speedway, despite the onset in recent years of international competition.

Former champions, including the dashing Oxford rider Mark Boaler and four time winner Lee Aris of Wolverhampton, will also be amongst the championship challengers. Paul Heard, of the Wednesfield Aces, is also likely to feature strongly.

Home fans will be cheering for Myke Grimes, Coventry`s very own handlebar hero. The 28 year old, from Wyken, was a shock 2012 British Final debut finalist and he has cemented his place amongst the top performers of the sport this year with a string of match winning displays for Coventry.

As part of the British Finals weekend, Bretford Bulldogs stage the British Under 10s final at Brandon Road Playing Fields, Bretford, on Saturday 24th August, starting at 1pm.

  • Posted the finals in rides https://www.lfgss.com/thread112444.html be good to make connections unfortunately too short notice for me to make it but keen to come to one of your events

  • This is big! I'll be there with the family.

  • Bump! Who's going and what time? I'm literally 10 mins walk from the place so will head up there to have a gander.

  • I hope to get there about 11.30, hopefully a zillion people won't have got the good viewing positions already. Unless I don't make it and get there for the mens racing.

  • Having a quick coffee at Starbucks at the hotel around the corner. Heading there in 10 or 15. Lots of trucks and stuff there when I rode past a few minutes ago.

  • A great day out! I got there in time for the womens final and the mens later.
What happened to "Myke the Byke from Wyk(en)" though?

On a critical note: sad to the usual car parking and zero facilities for cyclists - even at a cycling event!

  • I was there for the womens, then popped home at about 1pm. I came back for about 2:30 and it was rammed. Couldn't see much unfortunately. Me and Andy (15p) were there till about 4 and called it a day. I was crisping up in the sun.

  • A real neckburner! :)

  • i really enjoyed it & it was good to catch up.

  • Does anyone know if Sky Sports filmed it? I couldn't see any big tv equipment.

  • I saw a guy with an expensive tripod and a decent compact video camera. Like, several grands worth of camera. He was running around between races shoving it into riders faces, before running back to the tripod to film the next race.

I think I saw a second tripod at the other end of the track too.

  • Surely they'd have been advertising their presence if there!
    Could be wrong though.

  • Was that in the pits area Steve?

It was repeatedly said in the months leading up to it that Sky would be filming it to be shown in 32 countries so I would have expected some big Sky trucks with giant logos.

  • Yep, that was in the pits. Guy wasn't wearing anything branded. Mind, it would probably have been a separate production company doing the work I guess?

  • I saw this person often.

  • Nah, the guy had proper sony video cams.

  • Just cos it will be going out in 32 countries doesn't mean they'd roll up with huge branded OB setup, esp as it's not going out live. They'd be keeping costs as low as possible for something like this.

p.s. A mobile phone & YouTube has potential reach of more than 32 countries... hope you guys were filming too!
