fork question, threaded or ahead?

Posted on
  • so i found a 2000 chorus 10sp groupset for my steel frame i plan on building up this year :-/

got no forks for the frame (still not sure on carbon or steel) and i'm gonna use a modern stem, so no quill
what is the best way to go, a 1inch ahead or a 1inch threaded+quill stem converter?

  • You'll probably find it easier to buy an unthreaded 1" fork and cut it to size than a threaded fork of the right size, and if you are going to use a ahead stem then you might as well go ahead all the way.

  • Ahead.

  • yea seemed like the logical way to me too, is there any way to use a 1 1/8 ahead?

  • I assume from your OP that the frame has a 1" head tube so you can't use a 1 1/8" headset, obviously. However, with a shim, you can use a 1 1/8" ahead stem on the 1" steerer. In fact, you may have to do that anyway as you'll find it easier to get hold of a 1 1/8" ahead stem than a 1" one.
