When the wheel spins, the centrifugal force causes the internal circuitry - and I use the term loosely - to complete and the light comes on. It means that you never have to switch them on and the batteries don't wear out when the bike's not being used.
You have to go pretty rapid to make them Tron-like but its a bit of fun.
