  • The width of the chain (1/8 vs 3/32) generally refers to the distance between the inner surface of the inner plates. 3/32 chains come in a variety of specs i.e. 5/6, 7/8, 9, 10 and 11 speeds. They are all 3/32 but each is progressively "narrower" in the distance between the outer surface of the outer plates to cope with the progressively narrower gaps between the sprockets on cassettes with increasing number of gears.
