  • Mate...whats the back wheel? 40mm?

Thats almost exactly the look i was initially
looking for mine except for the front wheel...
    For now anyway.

    Love that bike!

  • 42mm H+son Formation rim. http://hplusson.com/products/formation-face

V-Sprint do them aswell, Minus the big 'ol price tag.

    H+ Rim = 60 odd quid.
    V-sprint = 80quid for whole wheel.

  • While here, it's actually more advisable to buy second hand for anything. Think about it; so long as it's not battered, second hand items have been tried and tested! So any failure that could have occurred would have happened while in the possession of the first owner. Buying new means you will be the first to experience any sort of failure as the product is fresh off the conveyor belt. Then again, some would argue against. I apply the same shopping habits of mine from technology to bikes, I buy second hand near mint for a part I will abuse. Then again, I chat a lot of shit.

one of the daftest things i've ever read

  • Yeah, that looks nice. The front wheel ill have
To get something machined so i can put a break
    on it.

I like the idea of V-Sprint...so may do a 40mm
for the back and 21mm front.

As for second hand option...i totally get your point
I'm still working out what i want...and checking
Classifieds section at least 10 times a day!

  • The rims i had on my mielec were IRD cadence which are sort of in between box section low profile rims and deep rims. I also had it set up with deeper rims, any excuse to post my bikes

  • ok...i've now seen too many pictures
of deep profile rims...and i'm back to
my original thoughts on the bike.

The only either design dilemma i'm having
is handlebars...either drop bars or risers.
Both will be used the same way, so drop bars
wont get the kind of use they should, its purely
aesthetic. The biggest determinant will be how
the frame feels and how high the seat has to be
and how much i want to bend over whilst riding.

BTW...thanks for the all assistance so far.

  • one of the daftest things i've ever read

"Then again, I chat a lot of shit"

  • Finally, what are thoughts on Columbus carbon forks?
    like this one:
    http://www.kinokocycles.com/parts/forks/tusk-straight-fork-1-1-8.html

I had these forks and really liked them, they look good and the punch through brake hole is a good option. However they are too expensive and I would buy alpina track forks instead (despite not having a brake hole) they can be drilled professionally or you could do it yourself

  • So any failure that could have occurred would have happened while in the possession of the first owner.

[CSB] This interestingly highlights the difference between F1 and offshore yacht racing. In F1 they'll say 'this component has done 21,000 miles, so it's almost worn out and needs replacing soon' whereas a boatbuilder will say 'this keel's got 21,000 sea miles in it, so you know it's not going to fail' [/CSB]

  • so the frame arrived today...very happy with this...now the buying and build can begin!

Ahh, so the theory has a workable logic behind it. Interesting, though I wonder how that would transfer over to bike parts.

  • Don't buy stuff that wears out secondhand, as the price differential reflects the reduction in useful life. This is drivetrain parts mostly.
When a company produces a durable item, 4% of which always fail in the first year due to an undetectable manufacturing defect, then buy secondhand. e.g. I think there was a badly brazed batch of Mexican Benotto frames at one point - but they've all fallen apart, so one you buy secondhand is fine.

  • so...sorted a few parts today...all black.
i got a seat and seat post, cranks and
chain ring, BB...all for about £100
Now all i need is parts for the front
end of the bike...so fork, brakes,
    and handle bars.

on the wheels front, putting in my
    order for V-Sprint wheels...40mm rear
    and 21mm front, all black.

I'll update with pictures once i put the
current parts on the bike...I'm now glad
I'm doing this...it is very enjoyable!

Nice! What cranks did you go for?
Also what seat? Took me eons before finding the right one for my ass. Also, frame looks great.

  • I got Andel cranks and Gebhardt chain
    ring...all black.

On the seat...i went to Kinoko they had a
black charge seat for £6.50 standard look...
for that price i'm happy for now.

looking at my v-sprint order now...
i wish i could get 40mm front but they
    don't do machined 40mm's.

  • Well...technically...you can still brake on it, it's just highly inadvisable, as I discovered as I tried to brake in wet weather after going at a fair clip. So that remains up to you.

Have a look at some machined 40mm's and see if you like the look. Maybe look around to see if you can machine it yourself (i.e sandpaper)

  • I wouldn't mis-match the wheels myself, it will never look just right if you do. Go for the 21mm front an rear IMO, if you go for silver I think the machined sidewall won't be noticeable. Or you could go black and tape the rear machined side wall.
Just my 2p, my wheels were mismatched and I couldn't ignore it.

  • Yeah, like i said before the wheel thing
Is something i change my mind on
    Everyday...tonight i'm thinking of the
21mm wheelset in silver, like you say
but black spokes and black hub.

Buy who knows i may change my mind
    again tomorrow!

  • anyone have any thoughts on the
Miche Pistard wheels? there is a sale
right now which make the same price
as the v-sprint wheels...are they any good?

  • Good wheels for track use but some people say they wear pretty quickly during street use, I’ve got one on the rear though and it seems fine, however for you, if you're going to be using brakes, steer clear as they dont have machined breaking surfaces. Also their lockring threading isn't consistent atm

Also a bit of lesson time:

Generally with rims if you see a silver outline on the rim, or the rim is silver, it has a machined breaking surface, I’d go all silver 21mm v-sprints for you, black hubs and spokes on silver rims looks a bit rubbish imo. though

also, so you know, i don't think anyone said, rims that are "low profile" are called box-section rims, the ones that are deeper are called deep v's/aero, referring to the cross section of the rim.

When kinoko get me the order i'm going to be building up some silver formula hubs onto silver mavic open sports with dt swiss spokes, tubes and tyres (rubino front, randonneur rear) and lockrings all included and selling them as a starter wheelset with profits going to the forum if you're interested?

Oh and forks, i'd go alpinas, save £75 compared to columbus tusks and spend that on other parts, the difference will be minimal between the two.

  • anyone have any thoughts on the
    Miche Pistard wheels?

  • Uve bin indra'd >>>

  • ok...so its a good thing i didn't go with the postcards!

i've made some progress on the build...
pics will come when i get a chance to
    take some pics and post...

  • so a bit of an update...i decided to
not go the cheap route, and although
i've made some saving buying some
things second hand, i'm gonna get
what i want and if its new then fine.

so with that in mind...i got a set of Halo
Aero track wheels, all black...its not thin
and its not too deep, its perfect.

also, got a Alipna fork, second hand, but
unused off a Dolan pre cursa, so really its
    new just cheaper.

the final peice is the handlebars...and i've
decided on the Cinella pepper risers. So
will buy that over the weekend and should
have it all built early next week.

i guess, then i can start learning how to ride
    fixed gear!
