  • I've got horizontal dropouts. Its a Pompino. I could be wrong. I run one tooth different on each side of a flip-flop and would love to run a bigger difference. Maybe I'll give it a shot.

  • Should be fine, those are track ends btw, not dropouts.

  • Sorry for the use of the incorrect term. Education much appreciated.

  • You can easily do three teeth diff on a pomp, unless you are limited by having a large tyre. With a 23mm 700 tyre I have managed 6 teeth diff.

  • Langster with 48x16, have just bought a sugino super mighty (or something like that) with a 54 to replace old crankset. Not sure what I was thinking!!!

  • I'm hoping you were thinking that 54/18 will be a more efficient and longer lasting drive than 48/16

  • well I wast looking to switch the rear cog, but should I?

  • Well, 54/16 is a pretty huge gear for just riding around, so unless you were finding 48/16 super spinny then you'll be wanting a new sprocket.

  • If oh didn't like 46/16 you'll likely also feel very under geared on 53-16 man.

  • 52-17

  • ^Me too..

Ha I definitely didnt find it super spinny but did want bit more gearing before spinning out on flats at top end although up the Ditchling 48/16 bought a tear to the eye, not sure what a 54/16 would do to me!

  • 50/20

depends where im going. head south. or west. 50/20, 44/17.
north east/north west. get 42t out. and spin .

  • i bought my first fixed / single gear bike today so not sure what my favourite gear ratio will be but i'll keep you posted.

  • Question for you knowledgeable guys, what difference does 1 or 2 teeth on the sprocket make?

  • A noticeable one.

  • Very true... Living or dying, winning or losing, comfy or not quite so comfy... It all depends. Any chance you could elaborate a little?

  • what difference does 1 or 2 teeth on the sprocket make?

On my TT bike with 53/14 gearing, a huge amount
On a singlespeed 29er with 32/20 gearing, not so much (but still enough)

  • Changed from 48/17 too 48/19 yesterday, feels good gonna improve my technique for sure!

  • Technique is half the game... everything!

  • I've been really enjoying 48/17 on my main bike, but I built a beater the other day and (partly due to finding the chainring in the bin) it's 44/18. It's a big difference but the lower gear is really nice, can't really spin very well so my speed has significantly decreased but slowing down and stopping and general control is really nice. I like both for different reasons, but hey who knew it, lower gear ratios are fun.

  • Think learning to spin will be useful especially as i want to have a bash at racing next year.

  • Racing... track, tt, road, alleycats???

  • Commuter.

  • Spin to win... apparently it's like pedalling, only faster.
