Checking 2nd hand Ergos

  • Hi

I recently picked up a 2nd hand 10 speed chorus group circa 2001 at a great price. This is my first experience of Campy Ergos. Is there anything I should be looking for to check they are working properly and can i avoid stripping them down completely ?

The lever and thumb paddle have a definite click when pressing either of them and the levers look in general good condition, hoods are intact . There is a bit or what might be salt corrosion on the brake lever itself but nothing too serious . Is this likely to have affected the internals?

As I bought them on ebay fro italy I'm just concerned if some thing is wrong with them I need to report it within a certain time frame . The seller said they were in good working order

If I need to strip them to check I will do, just hesitant as I haven't done this before

    Thanks

  • If they feel clicky, then they are likely ok. When the G-springs wear, they become really easy to shift, and the gear position becomes quite indeterminate.

  • Thanks , I will try and service them at some point but was hesitant to open them without knowing what I was doing. Ill check campy only, they have some good guides on there

  • It's not too tricky, but I wouldn't bother doing it unless they need the G-springs replaced. The design is very simple and doesn't need regular lubrication, etc.

  • Ok so here are the levers, looks like maybe salt corrosion doesn't affect performance but anyone have any Idea about how to improve the appearance? I tried a bit of autosol but it didn't do anything !

  • It's pitting underneath the coating. I'd just leave it if it were me. Not sure what's in th alloy apart from Aluminium.
