I've caught the train twice in the space of two weeks and seen people getting busted for no ticket travel attempts. Fun times.

I think you mean you've seen unfortunate fellow travelers who may have lost their ticket and are now facing the likelyhood of a criminal record and loss of their livelihood / means to support their family? .. I agree its funny but won't help increase overall train use and increases the cost for you in the long run / not so funny.

If you have receipt of payment can't you contact them and send them a copy of the receipt?

I could.. but id rather go to court and increase their costs.
