Vélocity Tyne Tunnel

  • How do you guys fancy having a smash out in the Tyne Tunnel?

We are closing the tunnel on Friday 13th September and having single speed sprint racing. We have qualifiers on static bikes where you set a time over 400m and the top times qualify.

We are also creating a class scene within the tunnel, with 1000 spectators inside the tunnel. The atmosphere will be unbelievable!!!

    See www.velocitystreetracing.com for some info.

Lets get the scene big in Newcastle and the North East!!!

  • Qualifiers have been really fun so far, looking forward to the next one.

Can you enter the final tyne tunnel race on a fixed gear bike though?

  • Yeh you can do the final race on a fixie.

  • The Rules page on the website has been updated and it doesn't look like you need to run 53/16 for the main event anymore. Does anyone know the deal with this?

    -------C&P from Velocitystreetracing.com----------------------------------------

    The Rules

    Qualifier:

    • Sprints will take place on 2 static bikes set up on roller cycle trainers which display the riders position and time by projecting onto a screen or wall.

    • The fixed bikes will have the gearing of 53/12.

    • 2 riders from the crowd will race head to head in a sprint trying to cover 400m in the fastest time possible.

    • Times from qualifier nights will be posted on the Vélocity website and the fastest 132 riders will be selected to race in the relevant main event.

    • There will be a winner of each qualifier night who will win a trophy.

    • There will be a king of Qualifiers jersey which will be presented to the fastest overall qualifier.

    • This presentation will take place immediately prior to the main event race start.

    Main Event:

    • All participants are required to check in at least 60mins prior to race start.

    • Competitors will be allocated timing chip (for helmet) and down glow kit to be fitted to bike.

    • 15mins prior to race start all competitors must gather at race pit for presentation of the King of Qualifiers jersey and race brief.

    • There is to be a neutral lap of the tunnel before the ‘Eliminator’ race begins.

    • The ‘Eliminator’ consists of 2 x laps of the circuit with a 1/4 mile sprint at the end of each lap. This is the ‘Sprint Zone’.

    • At the end of each sprint the last 10 riders are eliminated.

    • Sprint positions will be established via chip timing and if necessary photo finish. The decision of the officials is final and riders must exit the race if their number is called as eliminated.

    • All eliminated riders must exit the race via the pit lane.

** • The lap outside of the ‘Sprint Zone’ is the ‘Recovery Zone’. There will be pace vehicles holding the race speed to recovery pace of 13mph.**

    • Riders must stay behind the pace vehicles at ALL times. Passing the pace vehicles results in DQ.

    • Any riders crashing in the ‘recovery zone’ may re join the race group provided they have not missed one of the sprints. To rejoin the group the riders must follow the guidance of the race official.

    • Drafting is allowed.

    • Slingshotting or pushing is not allowed.

    • The last 32 riders at the end of the Eliminator progress to Duel.

    Duel:

    • This is a simple 1/4 mile (400 metre) straight line head to head sprint.

    • There will be a symbolic start of the sprint as the drop of a handkerchief. However this will not be the official starting mechanism for competitors so competitors must follow the light system.

    • Duel competitors will gather in the pit lane to be guided to the Duel start

    • Duel quarter final will be 8 x sprints of 4 competitors going head to head. The winner of each sprint will progress to the semi final.

    • Duel semi final will be 2 x sprints of 4 competitors going head to head. The winner of each sprint will progress to the Vélocity regional final.

    • The Duel final. 2 riders go head to head to take the overall win.
