I have the same problem which Im fixing the easy way by replacing the stem. I had however been thinking about getting one of these seat post shims and simply trying to cut it to the right width

Hi
Anyone happen to have a pair of the above knocking around. My LBS tells me they tend to come with brake levers (and are tricky to get hold of on their own) but I haven't got any with my lovely gifted cross levers and being on the boat this summer means ordering off the net is tricky as I have no address...
Thanks
Gareth

Hi All,
Was wondering if anyone had seen something like this in the UK?
http://ticycles.com/TCF/hardware.html - Under shims they have one that fits 7/8" to 31.8mm.
Looking at trying out some old school BMX bars onto a bike with a 31.8 handlebar stem.
Any tips would be great.
cheers

Zenith Handlebar Shims
http://www.velosolo.co.uk/shopbar.html
pricey, but flawless. you'd need a 22 to 25.4 and a 25.4 to 31.8.

1 cm of shim? I would get different bars or a different stem as that is some extreme shimming.

Buy new stem, they're aren't that expensive.

Buy a crate of beer, drink it, and get shimmin.

Edinburgh Bicycle used to stock them - I bought one a couple of years ago off of them. When it arrived in the post I realised how ridiculously chunky it was and what a terrible idea it would be to install it for any length of time. Plus I think it was over a tenner? You're more than half way to a new stem at that point.

Just buy any cheap stem with a 25.4 clamp and use a 22 to 25.4 shim. At least then it'll only be a small shim and not a big chunk.

or just buy a BMX stem

Cheers y'all. Fully realise this is not the best move. Bought the handlebars without measuring and now realising it is a ball ache to use them.
Whole point was just to adjust my ride position so maybe i just get some risers. But now I've got this far I'm pretty up for trying this maverick flex out.
Just to check: you can use 2 shims to make up the difference? @apollo

You can buy 31.8 risers for peanuts from chain reaction
-
• #43
True. Either that or a new stem. Its now just stubborness as the bars aren't all that anyhow. They are just old school BMX style with risers.

return handlebar and buy suitable one.
You could try using a strip of metal from a tuna can. Not ideal with drops but should be ok with riser bars.
