  • Shameless plug for http://www.centurionrunning.com/ (I'm a co-founder)

We have 4 x 100 milers (grand-slam) and 2 x 50s per year. And the absolutely pointless Piece of String race, where you start off and the distance is only known to the race director.

We have the NDW100 on this weekend, going to be a great race.

  • An unaffiliated shout +1 for centuion also... Great finishers buckles.

cousin larry, if you are James then hey! If you are Alex then I don't think we've met, but hello anyway :-).

  • Started work at 6am this morning so permitted myself to finish at 3 so went for an hours run around taplow, maidenhead and dorney.

I fucking love living outside of London.

    That is all!

  • Just ran for the first time in fivefingers. Fucking weird and ache in places that are entirely new to me, but in a good way.
Don't think I'll be ready for half marathon next month wearing them, but will start using them for my short runs during the week to build up slowly.
Feeling what surfaces you're running on is certainly pleasant.

  • Take it slow in those things. Too much too soon is a bad idea.

  • Thats the plan. Did 3k today for my first run instead of my usual 15kish on a sunday. Wore them food shopping and pottering around this afternoon, all feels well so far.
Been watching/reading all the associated gumph that goes with them and have no intention of rushing into anything with them.
Hopefully all the climbing/riding/working on my feet have given me strongish feet so the learning process shouldn't be too hard. Just need to get my running technique sorted now.

  • Hi! Does anyone know of any UK forums/websites with a focus on long-distance/endurance running?

ooh I did 52 k the other week in the scottish mountains?
    does that help?

  • a guy I know ran ultrarunner.co.uk but he's more multi at the moment so not sure how upto date it is, he's at IM Sweden this week.

The mainstream run forums picked up the ultra demand so most have active sub forums which probably cater to most

Non Ultra Race the Train next weekend for me, beginning to wish I'd run in the last few, erm, six weeks.

  • Where can I go to have my running looked at? I get blisters on the soles of my left foot about a mile in every time, so today I was watching my feet as I run and my left foot is overpronating massively (I already have motion control shoes as I have very flat feet). I'm sure it can't be great for me and blisters are really boring.

Help, I'm sick of looking like Forrest Gump (pre-running days).

  • Any running shop - There are Runners Need shops in most Cycle Surgery stores.

Pretend that you are buying a new pair of trainers.

Blisters may be a sock thing, or a seam thing though. My shoes are supposedly suited to my running style, but I end up with terrible blistering occasionally. Haz grim photos too.

  • get good socks, it's a tenner well spent

  • I went to see my physio due to calf pain, he got me to run on a treadmill and said, at once, "you're all twisted", and we've worked since then on straightening my spine out.

Previously I've been given all sorts of advice on how to control pronation etc etc, but no-one had spotted the actual issue.

= I would go see him (in Catford) and pay the (very reasonable) sum to get a holistic view, rather than a "lets focus on your foot and ignore the whole system" quick fix.

  • Blisters could just be a lacing issue though.

I have to use those extra hole at the top and do this ( the top thing not the bottom thing)....

I get massive heel lift otherwise.

  • I got these shoes at Runners Need (and got videoed on the treadmill for the megalolz) and the right shoe holds my foot quite well and stops it rolling in too much. I also bought some seamfree, double-layered socks after a particularly savage blister session and they help a little (as in, my feet stay intact for a couple of miles). Dammit, I would love the number of your physio!

I am confused by those laces. Heel lift = your heel sneaking out of the shoe? I don't think I have that.

  • Nike Elite Black Stability Running Socks: Amazon.co.uk: Sports & Outdoors

I have these socks and they are great, used to get bad blisters on the outsides of my big toes, but with those, nothing much. Marathon was fine :)
Also they have compression band around your arch helping to stop that getting stressed so much

  • Put some duct tape on the soles of your feet before you go out.

  • After my first day of fivefingers yesterday my calves are killing today! Yoga tonight and no run. Was planning on running the 8miles home from work tomorrow(in my normal shoes) but not so sure now..

  • Take it slowly with the VFFs. I mainly walked in mine for the first few months before very short jogs.

re. Blisters, there is some useful info here: http://fellrnr.com/wiki/Blister_Prevention There are lots of other factors but I recon shoes and socks are the key, I followed fellrnr's sock recommendations and only got 2 small blisters on my last ultra. My GF switched shoes and socks (to hilly double layer socks) and went from getting so blistered she couldn't run (even on short jogs) to no blisters overnight.

  • Back to running after a while away - 2.5 miles in and out of work just now and I feel like I'm made of lead. Bleurgh. Six weeks until the Great North Run and I need to put in the work so that it's a laugh and not a horrible slog.

  • I now have 2, not 1 but 2 black toenails
    #amidoinitright
    #amiarunnernow?

  • Cheers Ewan, will cease running in them for the time being then and just stick to waking in them/doing the transition exercises, at least til after this half marathon.
My blisters disappeared after starting to use cheap karrimor anti-blister socks from sportsdirect. Fiver for 2 pairs on special offer. Well chuffed.

I have sent you a helpful PM.

  • In my experience motion control shoes = mega blisters...

And that's ignoring any born to run theories...
