Take it slowly with the VFFs. I mainly walked in mine for the first few months before very short jogs.

Blisters, there is some useful info here: http://fellrnr.com/wiki/Blister_Prevention There are lots of other factors but I recon shoes and socks are the key, I followed fellrnr's sock recommendations and only got 2 small blisters on my last ultra. My GF switched shoes and socks (to hilly double layer socks) and went from getting so blistered she couldn't run (even on short jogs) to no blisters overnight.
