No. But does it even have to?

    Joy of (mechanical)fail-safe riding
    Joy of (mindfull)fail-safe riding
Joy of being connected to the surface you are riding on

  • Oh, you got me wrong! I am thinking about transforming my Steamroller into a fixed CX-bike but wondered if it's actually a good plan considering a low gear ratio while riding down some hills etc.

  • You could try it and if you don't like it buy a freewheel?

  • Anyone want 700c Racing Ralphs? £20?

If you already have brakes connected and sorted out - I would definetly hit the freewheel.

I put a freewheel on mine and rode it around the herne hill course on Monday and it was ace! Just not sure how well the calipers will cope with the mud once it starts getting rainy~
    I need a bigger freewheel though.. 42-20 or 42-21?

  • 42 - 20 if you are skilled or have to transport a distance before the mud.

  • just finished building this up for the coming cx season.

I built this up as a budget sscx bike for the coming cx season. I raided the parts bin, and some friends donated bits n pieces - many thanks to them!

    Anyway, spec is
    surly cross check f&f
ritchey wcs rims on no name hubs
    ritchey stem
    orbea bars
    tektro levers
    fsa canti brakes
sram rival crank set with gxp bb
    campag seatpost with giant seat

Plan is to race it as a sscx and upgrade some of the parts over the season. Its currently running 34 19 gearing - I will see how i get on with that. Im using a 10spd freehub with spacers,so i have a full range of gearing to play around with. its about 9kg, with some sensible upgrades I think i could get it to about 8kg which i would be happy with.

excuse the pic - i will get some decent ones next time im out on it.

  • Thinking of using an old road frame that takes 27" wheels with 700c wheels and these http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=390638553536 - think this could work for a budget sscx frame and forks? Rear brake clearance shouldn't be an issue - already checked... but the bottom bracket will be fairly low down compared to a true cx bike

  • ^a lower center of gravity isn't all bad :]

  • Nice. I love this thread

  • What freewheels are people using? Or how quickly is a cheap unsealed one going to die?

  • after all those shitty cheap ones i only use white industries

  • I've had a Shimano SF-MX30 on for two weeks / 100 miles, dry weather, no off-road and it already sounds quite shit. It doesn't slip though, and there's zero drag. Like, zero. It will do for now, but if it dies before Christmas I'll never buy another.
WI Dos Eno appeals to me.

  • I ran cheaper Dicta freewheels at work for a while and usually got about a month out of them. Have since upgraded to a "viz" from tartybikes and it's been amazing fir abut 8 months. No complaints, cheaper than a W.I. and comes in odd sizes.

  • White industries trials (for polo) is holding up superbly for me. BLB Royal is a no go.

  • on one pomp, 35 18 gear ( to match a 32 16 26er single speed gear )...just re-positioned the midge bars recently and have decided to not change them for standard road bars... I set the brake levers higher on the curve and turned the bars down so that the lower part is almost horizontal.

  • Guys, I know this has been asked before but I cant find it (searched to no avail) but what ratios are good for SSCX? I know it'll be different for everyone, but if I could get in the general range I'll be happy.

  • i've had great fun with 42x18 on some dry, but uppy and downy terrain.

  • 42x20 will be a good medium for most racing. Gravel roads can take higher gearings.

  • Cheap wheelset for sscx? 120mm hub.
