  • 48-16 or 48-18 for running about town

  • Reasonably fit at the moment, so back to summer gear of 48:15 for my flat 40 mile commute.

  • 48-16 or 48-18 for running about town

as discussed at the Red Bike Shop, an odd number on cog or chainring will give you more skid patches!

A 19t eai cog is on its way.

So 52/13 would be good? Or did you mean a prime number on the chainring?

  • Or just grow up and use brakes for deceleration, whereupon you can choose the right gear without having to concern yourself about whether your stupid trick cycling will wreck your tyre 50 times faster than the natural wear life or just 10 times faster.

  • Anyone know of an online list of what ratios equate to what? I always assumed everyone's front chainring would be similar, so many varied sizes are over my head.

Pretty easy to use and simple

  • This is by far the best one I've seen:

I never rode fixed (starting to get a list of components for my first build, very excited) but I already know 48/19 is the ratio :)

  • all relative. i'd say start lower than 70" and slowly work up until you want to go back down, hold off on doing so, then decide x

  • Of course, I was just joking, everybody needs to find what works for them.

Almost no point discussing, except for noobs like myself to learn about it and see which are some common options and starting points.

  • Wot?
Course it's worth discussing, for everyone who's interested in it...so most people on the forum.
Though this thread isn't the most reliable as there are undoubtedly SOME people bullshitting about the ratios they run because the think pushing a big gear is mega boss (which it only sort of is).

  • Sure, what I meant is that it helps beginners like myself and not much others. Except to satisfy curiosity or the urge to post your ratios and discuss them :)

When you think about it, nothing is pointless and everything is worth discussing. You can always learn something learn, even in most unexpected places. E.g. the link I posted above might be new to someone.

  • I created a Track Gear calculator . Give it a try. https://www.dropbox.com/s/ll3sn1vwfhw8clh/Track%20Calculator%20Complete.xlsx

this is actually really good. Thank you.

Thanks bro appreciated. Took some excel hassle but was fun.

  • Currently 46x16. Going to get 50 after the holiday

  • What cog do you plan on running?

  • I've been running 50 x 16 for a whole day now, with the intent of using the mercian for the track. The problem being getting it to the track in the first place, because even for a 3/4 km ride to a mates house it was really tough. Think I'll have to flip flop with 19 on the other side for sensible riding.

  • Will you have enough travel in the dropouts to use 50x16 on one side of flip flop and 50x19 on the other? I'm not sure I have. I'll be interested to find out.

  • Pretty sure that'll be fine, I can manage 48x19 to 48x14 on my bike.

Are you on a conversion with horizontal dropouts or a true track or SS frame with track ends?
