Is it time to start calling out bad cyclists?

  • That's the real problem - motorists and cyclists alike failing to indicate their intent.

  • How is using the left indicator lights and conspicuously positioning one's vehicle as far left as practical " failing to indicate their intent" to turn left?

  • I mean what's important is that, 'we all know what's gong on.'

    When** one** doesn't.

  • What a cretin. If there's no room, cyclists need to filter on the outside. "Filtering" on the left isn't even a good idea at all unless there's a separate lane or a lot of adequate space.
In fact it's safer for motor vehicles (especially articulated ones) to cut off that dangerous route altogether to encourage cyclists to filter/overtake properly.

agreed, although drivers hate even more when you filter on the right, but lecturing someone? Man up, drink something and be less deathly dull (the cretin, not you RPM)

Which drivers? I'd far rather have them on the right, it's where I'm expecting to get overtaken, plus no blind spots.

  • Smaller blind spots.

  • In my experience drivers dislike being overtaken by a bike. Undertaken ok, it's where they expect you to be

  • What's this undertaking people are talking about? Isn't that what people who run funeral parlours do? Or are we talking about passing on the inside?

  • haven't you seen the adverts on the back of buses?

  • just to be clear, I am against undertaking

  • No taking without permission.

  • I don't look at the backs of buses, I'm too busy passing them on the inside.

  • Smaller blind spots.

Well, if you're going to be pedantic, but any blind spot on the right big enough to hide a cyclist is far enough away that I can't turn fast enough to hit the bugger, or it's behind the A-pillar and in the case of an overtaking cyclist he will have just gone past my window and be turning away from me to present a small enough aspect to hide there.

I'm talking about panel vans, if I were driving a passenger car it would be very hard for a cyclist to hide anywhere and be close enough to be in danger.

  • Of course I'm going to be pedantic, I'm on LFGSS.

  • alot of cyclists seem to think it's their duty to filter up the inside of traffic, regardless whether it makes sense or not. most of the time i'd rather be in the stream of cars

  • alot of cyclists seem to think it's their duty to filter up the inside of traffic

that's because if you stop pedalling you will keel over and your bike will turn in to a pumpkin.

  • I'm always amazed by the cyclists who will only undertake. When a vehicle is really to close to the curb for them, they just dawdle along behind it, ignoring all the empty space on its right.

  • it's not that amazing. if you're not absolutely sure when the traffic is going to start moving again, or the road layout ahead. plenty of cyclists simply do not want to be caught on the right hand side of traffic when it's moving, especially if they are slow. there's nothing wrong with dawdling along behind, in line with traffic.

  • in line with other traffic.

    ftfy

Cyclists are traffic, not some separate entity.

I think you misunderstand me; they clearly want to get past the vehicle, are determined to undertake at the first opportunity and do not consider overtaking an option at all.

is it necessary to add "other" to mean "everyone is traffic"? we are traffic, we are in line with traffic, not mutually exclusive. I thought.

yes I did misunderstand you, I thought you were inferring that they would only undertake, by observing them dawdling.

  • The problem with sowing seeds into other cyclists is the inevitable paternity suits which can be financially crippling.

But with such a tantalising crack what's a bloke to do??

  • Ok i'm starting to piece this together. If you scan through most opf my contributions to this thread they are of a similar nature, none are intended to be taken seriously, it's a light trolling of some of the more self-indulgent whinging that goes on in here.

It comes from not cycling in London so I very rarely have problems with other cyclists, so I just pick something innocuous from my commute or ride and post it up.

Speaking of which another roadie overtook me today. Fortunately his shorts weren't see-thru, although they were white, so I followed his wheel for a bit. He said hello too. Roadies can be very courteous when they zoom past you, not so much when you overtake them.

Hope you don't think I'm getting 'aggy' with you. I totally understand the nature of your posts and they're a nice counter balance to what appear to be whiny posts. Thing is, I went away for a couple of weeks no bike, no cycling chat or anything. I came back with that just been away vibe of niceness and peace, yet being on the road for a day and a half around other cyclists has evaporated it already :-$

  • I mean what's important is that, 'we all know what's gong on.'

Rubbish! You have a vehicle that got to the queue first, having positioned itself so far left, Chavez would be envious with ZERO space for undertaking with a big orange flashing light saying I'm turning left coupled with a marching brass band and a choral choir angelically singing we're turning left with the world's biggest fireworks display in the background. Yet you will still get numerous riders turning up to this scene that will attempt to force their way to the front (depsite there being no ASL) skateboarding along the kerb due to the lack of space with the temerity to bang on said car's bonnet/roof because they've been inconvenienced.

Some people will never know what's going on.
