Seatposts with serious setback

Posted on
  • I'm currently looking for an inexpensive road seatpost with at least 30mm if not even 40mm of set back and 27.2 width.
To make it even more of a task it has to be at least 360mm long, so I'm probably looking at a 400m length.

Ambrosio do one in carbon, but That would just get nicked and scratched in my steel frame, and doesn't really fall into inexpensive anyway..
... I have also come across the velo orange post but at 300mm it is too short!

    Any recommendations?

    Thanks

  • If you need that much setback, does the frame really fits you ?

Well, I guess you could find what you need in radball/cyclobal components. (but it isn't very likely to be cheap)

  • old skool bmx seatposts with a proper layback ?

  • If you need that much setback, does the frame really fits you ?

I would say the frame is on the small side yes, but its so close to being great!

When I sit really far back it feels correct in terms of leg/ knee position but I am kinda hanging off the back a little...

    Arm position feels great,
Back; reaching over low but nothing stressful..

I've included photo to illustrate set up.
Since photo bars have been rolled back a couple of cm, taped and plugged.

I suppose the other question then is are there any saddles with longer rails?

  • Velo orange Grand Cru.

  • I think saddles can vary a lot not just in how long the rails are but in where the rails themselves are positioned in relation to saddle itself. So you may find one that effectively moves you further back without the need for loads of set back.

  • If you are using lot of set back and a long stem to compensate for a top tube that is too short is does sound like a bad idea. Your seat position should be based on reference to the crank position which has nothing to do with top tube length and would be the same whatever the frame size.

This bike would surely be a bad idea for racing / track / any thing else than a sit up round town number but for that it's really fun..
I suppose you can get away with a lot more with risers...

Totally agree that foot to pedal to crank to saddle is the first thing to get right then you should adjust accordingly.
I will measure my cranks compared to my other bike, interesting to hear crank position would be the same on any size frame.

If they are shorter than my other bike that might be why I feel happier pushing myself further back in the saddle..
(Granted other bike is bigger so not a fair comparrison)

    ^^
Will try a few different saddles lying about to assess, rail to saddle relationship, may well have one lying around with same lengh rails but which puts me further back...

I should have qualified that by saying that I am assuming the seat tube angle is the same on the different sized frames.

  • there was a k force seatpost on ebay with a big set back cant remember how much tho

  • I can see already that you will be a valuable addition to the lfgss forum, dani476.
    Welcome!

  • This will get you an extra 40 mil on whatever you choose

  • It's also HHSB approved:

this can offer a very radical saddle position

  • looks shit though

  • inexpensive
    30mm of set back
    27.2 width
    360mm long

It's expensive, three millimetres short in offset and ten in length, but this PMP is pretty nice.
