Sweet bike, nice fender line too.
Although, it's safer to have the exit end of the fender having a larger opening than the entry, so that what's big enough to go in will have room to get out.
Possible euph, but I'm no good at math. -
• #4205
tis' nice that.

Thanks. Maybe I'll do some adjustments to the fender line, but there really is no space at the back. I'm more worried about things getting caught on the nuts and bolts on the inside though, but when you get these things in place you don't want to mess with them again. The mudguards alone took more time than assembling the rest of the bike (measure, drill, dremel, hacksaw, repeat).

It's a beauty alright. Another frameset for me to consider for my geared bike.
I'm sure I should know but what are those hammered guards? Honjo or something?
Also, are those regular calipers or long reach?
-
• #4208
They are Honjos. Tried both Honjos and Gilles-Berthouds at my local lbs. The Berthouds seemed to need a few extra mm of space that wasn't there.
The calipers are Tektro R539 so they are fairly long reach(47-59mm). Had an old pair of Mafac Racers I wanted to use but did't have the tools/skills to adapt them to the recessed mounting so I just bought these instead.

I know what you mean concerning leaving the fenders alone once they're on.

A Singapore to London bike. large frame and 26" wheels.... not convinced.

Why not? smaller wheels = stronger, and more readily avaliable in countries between Singapore and London, unless he have 9 speed.
poor choice of bottle cages for a tourer, need something more sturdy and something that'll hold a 2 litres bottle.

Yeah. Makes sense. I'm getting wrapped up in the aesthetics of the thing.
Good point ref bottle holders, although he isn't going anywhere for a while, he got his GF knocked up 4 months before departure.I'm really not a fan of the PC brakes though. I had them on a BMX a while back that came with. Nightmare to set up.

LOVE cables along op tube.
Worry about strength of the rack though, angles to the fork braze ons seems too oblique. -

red shifter plays well with sram MTB derailleurs??
-
• #4220
Do you mean can you cross over Sram's mbt stuff with their road?
If so yes. My understanding is all their 10 speed stuff is mix and match. Smallfury for eg uses the red tt shifter as a thumbie with his fat bike and I've seen others do the same on 29'ers.
I've never really understood why more people (expecially in cx) don't use the Sram mtb rear mechs. The cable run is a lot neater, less prone to catching, and I would assume that they'd be a bit sturdier and more suited to muck.
Also you can use most rear mechs with most shifters. It's the front mechs and the cassettes that tend to be less interchangeable. I had a long cage 9-speed Decore with DA 9 speed bar ends, and a 9-speed decore cassette.

so, what would be a good, but affordable 1x9 (or 1x10) setup for this?
I'm thinking one of the new rear mech like shimanos shadow plus or srams type 2, but I've also been suggested ultegra..
I'd like to be able to switch to drops so I thought using a 31.8 front mech clamp to put a mtb shifter on the top of the bars.

functionalCP:9 speed will be cheaper overall, not just the parts but cassettes, chains, etc. Deore stuff is always a great price point. Good quality, robust, but usually just a little tubby. 10 speed will obviously give you more range though.
I don't know how the room will work out if you're putting a trigger shifter onto a mount on drops. Also you loose out a bit on shifting when you're in the drops.
I'd be tempted to go for 9 speed deore rear mech, 9 speed DA bar ends with a thumbie-type conversion mount - I think I've seen them in a range of clamp sizes. So you'd then be able to either run it on the tops of drops as I think you were suggesting, or plug it into the bar end. Thumb shifters will also fit aesthetically I reckon.
Where did you buy the frame from out of interest? Searching doesn't seem to help.

Or the bling option would be Sram 10 speed rear mech + trigger shifter for flats and then in drop set up a right hand drop bar lever/shifter and S900 single speed lever on the left.
But that's a fair whack on shifter combos.

s500 left and apex right would be awesome

thanks for the ideas!
the drops, I'd like to use are on my sscx and come with levers and brakes. easiest swap would be to take both bars and brakes over, but then I can't really rewrap for a bar end shifter or sti. hence the clamp idea.
I bought the frame second hand in my lbs. I think it's the first in northern europe.edit:
I also made a functional pump mount on the rack:
That's swank as flip.
