I'd also guess their point of view would be this: Many a want away player have been made to/convinced to stay for a year more. He is one of the best players in his position on the planet coming into a world cup year whom recently signed a four year contract and has NOTHING in his contract to suggest a £40M* release (a fact backed by his threat to submit a transfer request). As unpalatable as it is, it would still be better than allowing him to go to a team that barely made the top 4 under-priced.
I know you were hopeful of such a clause but why would a club who two years ago made £50M for torres allow a better player to stroll off for £10M less with his recently revised contract?
