Yeah, sorry, as opposed to a 144bcd crank - I tried Stronglight 2000's 48t with a 107bb and a 111bb (113bb worked but threw the chainline out to far)

I also tried a set of Omniums 48t standard bb but they were even worse.

Strange that, Mine fit perfectly fine. In fact, most external BB's have allowed for plenty of space between spider and stays. On one externals being the closest. I'm running SRAM S300's now with plenty of space. I guess as TONY said. There must have been a change at some point.
