• "Slowing down" is holding a flat palm with fingers pointing downwards towards following traffic. I always use my right hand.

    I do this and find it works. If I am in secondary a trailing car at 4-5 o'clock IME will often figure out what is going on and also slow. If I am in primary and do this I often look what is behind me and have found it's a good signal for drivers to stay back and off my rear wheel. I tried the arm out, palm down, pat-the-dog Highway Code thing and my sense is it angers drivers, as if some crazy cyclist is telling them what to do.
