I slowed down to stop to let a van turn right into a side road as there was a car already giving way on CS7 this morning
if a car travelling the same direction as you has stopped and is waving through someone in the oncoming lane it's not a courtesy stop it's stopping yourself getting left/right hooked by someone who doesn't expect a bike to be hooning up the cycle lane/left of stationary traffic.
that is probably the most common cause of collisions involving cyclists, it's my responsibility to watch traffic ahead and identify potential hazards. it's the person behind me's responsibility to maintain a safe distance at all times in case of a hazard, this involves not overlapping wheels or sitting on my wheel.
to me this should be as clear cut as it is with cars. if you get hit from behind it's the person behinds fault. otherwise you create a grey area where people become comfortable drafting (tailgating to use car terminology) at unsafe distances because a portion of the blame gets shifted to the person in front for not warning someone they need to stop which in any genuine hazard situation is impractical on a bike because both hands should be on the bars keeping your bike steady and under control while braking.
if you can't stop when I do, stay the fuck back. hit me and you'll be paying for the damage.
I know bothers feels bad about it but just because it's not nice to see someone hurt it doesn't mean they didn't inflict it on themselves with poor riding.
