WTF has happened to my tyre?

Posted on
  • Front tyre on my road bike, only a few hundred miles old... Is it going to explode and cause me to use my face as a brake?

  • pinched tube?

  • ^ Looks that way...

  • It's not losing air though?

  • Eggy.

It's a defect exploited by the high pressure.

  • Had the exact same problem with a Lugano, manufacturing defect and it bulges from the pressure. It developed after 50miles so the shop I bought it from replaced it

  • Safe to ride or not? Will contact the manufacturer anyway...

  • Agreed. Looks like a manufacturing defect to me. Take it back, get a refund.

  • We used to get these all the time on our cheap BMX tyres. Admittedly because of abuse. But a defect in the carcass has the same effect. The threads stop the rubber expanding. If you damage them or they are defect. the rubber is allowed to expand with the tube. I'd bin it.

Am I the only one that knows the term 'eggy'?

  • I am old too but don't remember the term eggy when talking tyres. Talking farts, then yes very much remember it.

  • They were like a badge of honour. Showing how well you abuse your BMX.

  • Use it for Paris-Roubaix practice.

  • I used it for the Dunwich Dynamo, this happened:

and the inside looks like this:

Fortunately a boot made of gaffer tape lasted the last 60 miles!
