Any ahead external cartridge bearing headset is probably going to look a bit bulky on a steel frame compared to a trad 1" threaded loose ball headset.

Re headsets there's a Far East co that also does nice roundy shaped 1" threadless handsets that look good with old frames. Still some graphics tho and the silver seem hard to find (although that shop on Newington Green, Push(?) had them.

No, that's a brazed steel stem, which is the one way to make ahead successfully look trad - although you generally lose the benefit of a separate faceplate at the bar interface.
I mean a chunky alu ahead stem like this:
