• Not really forum rider down, but forum rider in collision where other riders went down.

I slowed down to stop to let a van turn right into a side road as there was a car already giving way on CS7 this morning, and a girl on a road bike smashed into me from behind. I think I must have done a Cav-style shoulder punt as I was completely unaffected while she came off, also knocking down a second girl on another road bike like a skittle who was in the process of undertaking me on the other side.

Both girls have been packed off to hospital in an ambulance in tears, one with a dislocated shoulder that looked and sounded extremely painful. Ho hum. Feel pretty shitty about the whole affair and need to examine my riding style a bit more.

    I
agree that its the cyclists responsibility to maintain a safe distance from road users in front, and as such, the two ladies that came off are at fault. HOWEVER, giving way/courtesy stopping as a cyclist carries an inherent risk of being rear ended. If you are going to do it, you really need to be certain that the road behind you is clear, otherwise you can expect with fair probability to get rear ended. Cyclists don't have brake lights so it takes longer to realise a cyclist is slowing down compared to a car.

I mean, I'm sure most of us here have been in a situation where you are riding in the primary, and a vehicle is following closely. Does it make sense to give way to say right turning traffic in this instance? No, because unless the driver was also planning on giving way, he/she will probably end up plowing into the back of you.
