Out of curiosity more than anything, but why are you riding against the prevailing wind direction?

Nice ride. I used to live in Folkestone (many, many years ago) and spent quite a few nights camped out by those accoustic mirrors above Hythe. 85 miles? That's further than I've ever cycled in one day. Need to think about this as getting to Kings Cross for 8am could be a challenge.

Fudging freezing? ??

I had never considered the prevailing winds. I just know that Dover is a bit of a hole, the scenery gets nicer the farther you ride along and it's easier to catch a fast train home from Seaford than from Dover. Admittedly I've never done it from Brighton so maybe this has made it harder than necessary - but I've loved it nonetheless.

Understatement of the month. Getting out of Dover is the main motivation to cycle up that hill!

********CANCELLED - ON HOLD UNTIL THE SUMMER**********
Will amend the date at a later point. I think I've jumped the gun for this ride, maybe it will get more interest in the spring / summer.

It’s to be a fun, steady pace - not Smasharound McCoy pedalling around all balls out and shit.
This is such an amazing sentence. I'd be up for it when it gets a bit warmer. Plus a bit of an extra ride to Brighton and it'd be a round century.

Yeah sorry about that. I just thought it would be good to get at least 7 or 8 peeps up for it. I've also come into a place for Hell of the Ashdown so it works out ok (for me at least). You can be sure I'll be running this in the next couple months, it's one of my favourites. Looking at you Sweaty.
Hairnetic I really suggest you look at my route as there are two crucial workarounds I've found. Coming out of Rye you need to follow the B2069 to Dumb Womans Lane (!) instead of following the NCN2 or else suffer some seriously rocky mountain bike shitpath. Horrendous on a track bike. It rejoins the cycleway at Winchelsea station. Also note the workaround past Rickney and Downash Marsh - again the NCN2 will take you through megamud horse trail so this is best avoided unless you want to be up to your proverbial balls in muck.
The descent into Seaford is wicked and the town has everything you need. I would not continue to Brighton. It's grim ride to Peacehaven and from there you must choose between the very busy A259 or more NCN2 paved in the style of Micky Rourke's face. I have never seen such bad pavement. 8 inch potholes, 3 inch cracks, seams and seams until Brighton. Not worth it.

Yeah whoops forgot all about this one. Hmmmm. It's either going to be late August or mid-September before I get around to this I reckon. I'll have a look and repost a date. If you do it in the next few weeks enjoy it, very good fun. Thanks for the reminding Sweats and I'll see you on the bridges!

I'll be up for doing it with you then. And yes, see you next Friday.

The photos above are taken from a previous ride. So this is a damn fine ride through a damn fine part of England. About 90% of the time it follows the NCN 2, the other 10% I’ve adapted to avoid ridiculous ‘undeveloped’ sections (aka mountain bike shit). Starts on the White Cliffs which then runs along the coast, passes through medieval battlefields and marshland (including the Romney and Rickney marshes: Areas of Outstanding Natural Wetness) and ends in Seaford. Total is about 85 miles. I’m going to try and swing us by some of those weird-ass 1920s concrete acoustic mirrors they built to listen for airplanes as well but that’s TBC. It really is a cracking, totally beautiful ride and we’ll have a bit more light at the end of February that we do currently.
Particular Particulars
It’s a roughly £20 ticket out to Dover and a roughly £10 back from Seaford (via Brighton). Bit of dosh I realise but it’s a full day out far from the lands of London (sorta). Groupsave keeps it roughly at this price so it’s recommended you gang up. The fast train out to Dover will be at about 8 a.m. from Kings Cross. Regular service from Seaford back to London.
Oh and fixed or single-speed only please, though if that’s a barrier to you coming along then please come on whatever will allow you to hang with the group best. It’s to be a fun, steady pace - not Smasharound McCoy pedalling around all balls out and shit. There’s a bit of climb out of Dover and but one other hill to speak of really, Fairlight, and it’s doable fixed.

%22%5D%5B/ame]
Normal Particulars
Self-sufficiency
Bring tools, spare tubes, appropriate clothes, plenty of food and water and lights that work etc. Familiarise yourself with the route, swap numbers before departing, and charge your phone. Eat/drink little and often.
Check your bike
Give it a look over before the ride – tighten, inflate, oil, check wheels for glass/used needles/spokecards from events you never attended
Road etiquette
Try to remain vigilant on the country lanes, especially when navigating blind corners. Let others know when you are slowing or coming past, and for the benefit of those behind you, call out or point at hazards such as potholes and cars. If you have a puncture, mechanical or drop off the back, call out to those in front to wait, and unless they hate you, they’ll pass the message forward. Don't go off the front as it splits the group.
So who’s keen?
