  • They know you're there, they just won't necessarily change immediately, you either have to wait for the other stage to max out or for your allocated window to open. If the site is running SCOOT then this will make little difference either and you just have to wait your turn.

  • If ever I'm stuck at lights that don't seem to change, I call I am Hingis's personal line, and have him change them for me.

  • You have singlehandedly taken all the fun out of waiting at lights.

No dancing, waving or laying your bike down on the ground over any bit of tarmac that looks like it might contain a sensor.

I'm off to cry now as my world has gone a bit more grey.

Can I still flash passing buses?

  • No but if you ride alongside a bus going through the right junctions you will get priority going through. Feel free to flash the occupants.

  • I have only been doing the route along Old St/Clerkenwell Rd/Theobalds Rd for a week, there is a bus lane at the bottom of Theobalds Road that continues straight onto Bloomsbury Way.

I had always ploughed on down here following others, but this morning a whole bunch of police were there, pulling bikes over to point out it's for busses only and a dangerous route for cycling.

He mentioned a £30 fine, but gave the standard 'let you off with a warning' speech.

As I set off in the direction that I should have been following down Procter Street and across Holborn crossroads I realised, that this was the bit where that poor guy was killed by a lorry two weeks ago. TBH I think I'd rather my chances in the bus lane, horrible junction, no wonder so many people take that route.

(For the record the police man was very nice and reasonable)

  • Unbelievable

  • I go left onto Proctor Street everyday, then round onto High Holborn toward the centre of town- it's fine.

That said it's silly that cyclists cannot use the bus lane.

  • When I used to head West along there, I'd always take my chances through the bus lane. I'd rather pay £30 every so often than run the gauntlet of the alternative.

  • The Police tell us that they are saving lives because cyclists in the bus lane pull out into the oncoming lane to overtake.
We have suggested they put a temporary barrier down the bus lane and let the cyclists in. It could be done tomorrow. Cyclists would have to stay behind the buses where it is narrow but that's far better than the deadly alternative

  • Alternatively, they could widen the bus lane around the stops.

Which, again, could be done tomorrow.

  • The Holborn contraflow bus-only lane thing is just going to run and run until TfL finally return Holborn to full two-way operation. It is of course nonsense to speculate that the death might have been caused by the current rubbish (inconvenient and antiquated) arrangement, as such deaths have happened at plenty of ordinary junctions which are much less alarming, but there is no question that currently cyclists wishing to go east-west are getting a bum deal. Not only do they have to negotiate the ridiculous and excessively alarming one-way system up to the Kingsway/Southampton Row junction, but they then also have to execute a right turn across multiple lanes of moving traffic into New Oxford Street from High Holborn.

Both what Charlie suggests and widening the bus lane could obviously not be done literally tomorrow, but it certainly wouldn't take a very long time to change the traffic order(s) involved and tweak the layout. Still, the best option would be full two-way working, which would take longer and attract a higher cost, but as this should long have been done to all London gyratories, anyway, Holborn wouldn't be a bad place to start getting a move on at last. (It should be noted that Tottenham Hale has just gone two-way and they are working on King's Cross, and probably a few others I've forgotten about, as we type.)

I also frequently cycle that way and I've never had an issue there. The bus lane just isn't wide enough for buses and bikes, which is fine if you're happy to sit behind a bus, but we all know a large number of cycle commuters will do anything to get in front of any vehicle.

  • Police ticketing RLJers on Kensington high street this morning. They were there for a week straight last time, some evenings to so keep an eye. The T junction heading eastbound by Waitrose.

  • This morning at the Camberwell Green junction police having a word with the driver/rider of any motor vehicle remotely close to being in the ASL and giving them a flyer to advise that they can "get points on their license" for such behavior.

    How refreshing.

  • From the critical mass facebook page this morning.

"Police cyclists nabbing cyclists @ Grays Inn Rd, Theobolds Rd junction now."

It's around 200m! I have NO idea why people feel the need to get in a huff and try to overtake only to be stopped by the crossing traffic. A couple minutes wait during busy times is all that's required. The ones that freak me out are the "I'll wait RIGHT behind the bus, then just yank my bike out into possibly oncoming traffic" makes my teeth itch.

Same this morning on Shoreditch high street giving a leaflet about giving cyclists space

  • enough with the fucking leaflets when are they going to fine them, like they would if a cyclist ran a red which is the same fucking crime only less lethal

    fuckwits

  • Knightsbridge/Kensington, opposite Harrods basically, water works have coned off a lane on both sides of the road for the last couple of days, copper was ticketing cyclists for filtering the wrong side of the bollards. So gridlocked I achieved position 1293/1296 on Strava for this section. csb

  • Angel: Goswell Road just before the City Road crossing. Three police looking people with nothing better to do.. Pic and comments to follow..!

  • enough with the fucking leaflets when are they going to fine them, like they would if a cyclist ran a red which is the same fucking crime only less lethal

With ASLs: when they have fitted cameras. Also to be fair having failed to enforce them since 1986 when they were first introduced it only seems fair to give motorists some warning that they have finally decided to police them.

  • There was an article on the news tonight - two week clampdown on RLJ-ing for bikes and stopping in the ASls in the car - £100 fine and 3 points which seems steep if you get caught when the lights change. £50 for the cyclists

  • if you get caught when the lights change it's not an offence. they're not like junction boxes, you can stop in them.
