653 was a successor to 531 Professional which you correctly say was mixture of 531 main tubes and 753 rear stays. The old 531 became 531 Special Touring. I don't think such tubes were suitable for TIG welding hence their demise.
I have a 1997 vintage 653 Arthur Caygill.
