Beater/Commuter/Tourer/Rat - uninspiring project

  • So I have 3 bikes, an MTB, a Road bike and a fixed commuter/rat. I have decided I also need a touring bike, for mini weekend tours, riding to crags with climbing gear and the odd longer tour as well. Due to space this needs to double up as an around town rat bike and commuter so I can get rid of the fixed bike. I do not care a jot how this thing looks, it will be locked up outside pubs and nightclubs and overnight in sketch areas so the less desirable the better, also want it to be as cheap as possible so that if it does get nicked I don't have to cry too much. Obviously it also has to work pretty well if I am going to tour on it.

The frame i am going to use is a lightweight lugged steel frame with 753 and Concorde decals, I don't believe it is a Concorde, but it could be 753 as it is pretty darn light. It has some funky looking paint and a nice big dent in the top tube.

For the groupset I picked up 9 speed Tiagra from Howard for £40 + postage. It has bar end shifters which I have wanted to have on a bike for years. All in nice condition and a long cage derailluer so I can get a nice big MTB cassette on for touring.

Got some cheap bullhorns to go with the above.

Also got a nice 105 to open pro rear wheel for £25+postage on the way, in good condition and true, but has a dent in, has a 9 speed cassette included which I can swap for the MTB one when using it around town. After reading up i reckon it should be easy to fix with some wood and a hammer and then be a bit of a bargain.

Front wheel will likely be a DP18 track wheel that I have lying around, been using one of these on my fixed beater and really impressed with its durability, still true after a year of commuting on manchesters roughest roads. Also it has track nuts and is very cheap, all good for leaving around town.

Got a rear rack lying around and picked up these panniers (not that rack) for £40+postage from Messyrage.

Going to pick up the below from Chainreaction next week.

For the Chainset I think I am going to use a single 44t on the frontfor commuting etc, then when touring will swap the Shimano Sora compact from my road bike. Not ideal, will probably get a new chainset for my road bike at some point then keep the sora on this permanently. Got some old shimano 130bcd cranks lying about so will just need to find a 3/32 chainring for cheapz, 44-46 considered if anyone has one knocking about?

I'd also like some suggestions for a front rack that I can stick a bag on top of when commuting/shopping, or a tent and/or a few other bits when touring.

So a totally uninspiring utilitarian build. Any advice, suggestions or downright ridicule welcome.

  • I am asuming you won't be carrying a bouldering mat? I would love to see someone trying to ride a bike with a piano sized pad on their back up a steep road to Stanage. I too have had to cut down my bike stable. My Tourer is my best bike though so not getting left anywhere.
Do you think you could get away with an internal hub gear?

  • Hah, no not carrying a bouldering mat. I don't even like walking far with them, if the wind is blowing its like a sail!

I could certainly get away with a hub gear and considered one for a while, but in the end opted for normal gearing as I understand it better, have most of the parts and spares and I want to be able to change cassettes.

I am thinking the full build will come in around £250, plus a £32 brooks from the Halfords price match debacle. This is just about low enough for me to feel OK leaving it locked up around town (brooks will be chained to the frame, and might even cover it with a sainsbury's bag while using it round town).
