• Can anyone with a van help me this Saturday, either before 11am or after 4pm?

I need to collect a fridge freezer from a house on Meadow Place Vauxhall SW8 and help me bring it to my 2nd floor flat on Rita Road, also SW8, pretty much round the corner. Its less than 0.3 miles in distance so should not take more than 15 minutes.

Fridge dimensions are 170cm tall x 60cm wide and 60cm deep, and so quite a tall van is needed as fridges are apparently supposed to be carried upright. Or I dont mind going in the back with it and leaning it a bit if anyone has a smaller van.

I'm a strapping lad but will also need help carrying it in and out if thats OK. Happy to pay you in beers, pounds or some other reasonable unit.

    Quote me happy.

    Thanks
    Dan

  • For 500 yards, surely a dolly or sack barrow would be just as easy as getting into and out of a van. Needs a hi-top to carry upright, but you are allowed to lay refrigerators down as long as you stand them up for 24h before plugging them in.

  • Yeah I did think some sort of trolley or even a big bike trailer may work if I went slow and had a helper. Happy to do that if anyone has one, but as I don't have a car getting hold of one may prove more tricky to get than a van so I went with the van option.

But hey this is a bike site so I'd be interested to hear if anyone has a trailer or trolley. Has Scoble not moved house or similar amounts of stuff on trailer?

And as for the fridge on its side, I had seem some conflciting info on the web but the majority of the chat seemed to imply oil leaking from compressor onto cooling elements or something was very bad so thought I'd err on the side of caution. I'm bloody skint so can't afford risking fecking the new one up.

If none of the above prove possible in time I'll just hoodwink a mate (who does'nt know yet and surely won't be too pleased with the plan) and we'll walk it round.

Its definately not the weather to have no fridge or freezer, the boiler broke and I had no heating or hot water for a week during that savage cold winter a year or so back, this flat can't take extremes.

  • Why don't you just buy cold beer, put it in the fridge you're moving, then just have you and someone else just carry it, with regular beer breaks...which...wait for it...ARE IN THE FRIDGE!!

  • ^ Genius...

  • ^^haha, well if no trailer, trolley or van options present themselves this will have to be the plan. Fingers crossed for no drunken falls by my unsuspecting assistant and subsequent calls to claims direct. 'have you done your back in as your friend gave you beer and then made you carry a fridge 0.3 miles across south london streets, if so call us now on.....'

  • OK sorted, mate has van for day, splendid. ice cream and cold beers for sunday is on!
