Locks that work

  • So there has been a ton of discussion on which chain or U-lock to get.

I am in a situation where I have a chain and a U, but need a tiny U-Lock or padlock in order to secure the chain.

These are some of the ones I have been looking at:

    http://www.xenasecurity.com/product/bullett/main/XBLSeries/XBL2_25/page1/

    http://www.abus.com/eng/Security-at-Home/Padlocks/Granit/GRANIT-37-60-37RK-60

or the squire SS50CS (but it is a lot more money)

How often do people empty to cut the lock vs the chain?
Is there any concern with how much room exists between the chain link and the edges of the lock (for instance xena has a 35mm wide lock that would mean about 2cm of room to slip a cutter in)

Please let me know what you think!

also awesome thread, never thought of locking the cranks like that.

  • Those chain locks are very hard to cut, because so little of the lock is visible for cutting. I like the design of the Xena if that helps. As for statistics,.....they do not exist. For an inexpensive option, this type of disc lock can also be considered.

  • I find it hard to believe that a £13.95 pad lock works as well as a £89.95 squire.
Or is it really just the same?

If the shackle is open (opposed to close like in the one you linked) how large (mm) should it be?

I am having alot of trouble tracking down any comparisons for padlocks.

  • I prefer the design of the Abus linked above, because its difficult to get at with an angle grinder or a boltcutter. The one I've shown above is more vulnerable, but still a good option. The shackle parts need to fit inside the links, so I would think very few would exceed 11mm.

  • I bought the Kryptonite M18-WL - does anyone know how to mount one to a bicycle? Apparently the 'EZ Mount' is terrible (and may not even fit it?). Thanks!

  • I've never thought attaching a very heavy lock to a bike frame, via a small plastic fitting was ever a great idea. Lighter locks maybe, but a heavy lock should be in a bag.

  • Anyone willing to rate this lock?

It's an Abus U-mini, 16mm lock, I was about to buy it when I checked this thread. I'm looking for the best lock for under £50.

  • See the Secondary Locks thread.

Also, its not really 16mm at all, but thats also discussed in the thread.

  • Thanks GA2G; so not really good as a main lock. I have a mate coming over from the US, I wonder if the KriptoniteFag...is cheaper in the USA, might get them to bring one over...hmmmm.

  • Definitely not a main lock. But there are many locks to choose from. If its in the list (page 1 of this thread) then its an appropriate main lock. But its your budget that will decide what you want to buy.

    Cheaper here http://www.decathlon.co.uk/mini-abus-u-lock-yellow-id_8203082.html#avantages

    But only Silver rated

  • Cheaper here http://www.decathlon.co.uk/mini-abus-u-lock-yellow-id_8203082.html#avantages

    But only Silver rated

The Red and the Yellow versions are different locks, given different ratings by Sold Secure - they look the same except for the colour. Yellow has a Gold rating, and the Red has the Silver rating.

The Yellow has the nomenclature Abus 401/130HB 140 U-Mini, the red is known as Abus 40/130HB 140 U-Mini.

EDIT: Apologies. I had mixed up the info for the 2 locks, thanks to Cranky for pointing it out.

  • Isn't it the other way round, is yellow has the gold rating and red the silver?

I have the yellow version and whilst not having as good a reputation as some of the Kryptonite and Abus locks I think its great. I don't live in a city though where bike crime would be higher.

My only faults with the lock are the key slot has no weather proofing, and depending on what your locking to or your bike shape it can be a smidgen short.

  • Personally I think it's about detering the casual thief. If it looks beefy enough they'll walk on. Youtube is kind enough to tell you how you can defeat most locks.
    Only 3 down personally

  • Isn't it the other way round, is yellow has the gold rating and red the silver?.........

You are right - I'd mixed them up.

    Corrected. Thank you.

  • Wasn't this point raised before and the red/silver rated one comes in yellow aswell but the gold rated one is always yellow?

  • They're actually different locks, but the look the same....save for the colour.

The explanation here tells of the difference.

The red version weighs 980g*, and that yellow one weighs 1025g-1035g** without keys.

    • Weight taken from Abus site
** Weight taken from Wiggle site

I think its fair to say that the yellow one being heavier and having improved internals, is the reason it scored a Gold instead of a Silver from Sold Secure.

  • yeah but the abus 40 comes in yellow aswell, not just red

    http://lockitt.com/Lockitt/product/ULAB40135.html

  • ......
The Yellow has the nomenclature Abus *401*/130HB 140 U-Mini,
the red is known as Abus *40*/130HB 140 U-Mini........

There is at least a difference on the Sold Secure site for their reference numbers, showing them, to be distinct from each other. And the site you chose shows two yellow locks, and that clearly shows the difference in reference numbers, and price. Its confusing, but there you are.

    Yellow 40/130
    Yellow 401/130

  • oh yeah i'm not arguing that the two yellow locks are different locks i was just pointing out that you can't tell which is which by the colour because the abus 40 which is normally red also comes in yellow like the more secure abus 401

  • The one I posted above is definitely the abus 40 Silver rated lock, as is the much more expensive red ebay one.

    See http://www.abus.com/eng/Mobile-Security/Bike-safety-and-security/Locks/U-locks/U-mini-40

I'm guessing it might be a grey import because the abus 40 shown here http://www.zyro.co.uk/products/locks?p=&q=&ob=priced&ps=0 is only listed in red.

  • I have these two when locking my bike outside.

    and one of these also.

What do people think about this? Overkill or what?

  • if you're happy to carry them then nothing's overkill.

  • oh yeah i'm not arguing that the two yellow locks are different locks i was just pointing out that you can't tell which is which by the colour because the abus 40 which is normally red also comes in yellow like the more secure abus 401

This is correct, I bought a yellow (coloured) Abus Mini off Decathlon a while back which is the cheaper silver-rated version. See my post (and munchbunch313's) on page 2 of the secondary locks thread.
