Chung, think the images must be private on your dropbox as they're not coming up!
Definitely want to hear how you reverse engineered the clue...

Woops! Better?

• #12962
Yep. Where was the old one?

a non uniform location linked to a British orchestra person and piece, that in turn is linked to photo of a man on mars taken on this day in history by some viking.
Top clue :)
Viking 1 took a picture of the Cydonia region of Mars on 25-07-76, including what appeared to be the 'old-man-on-mars'.
British orchestra person was the hardest. There aren't many really famous composers but it still took me ages trawling their wikipedia pages for links to Mars, Vikings, Cydonia or even 'Old men' :)
Finally clocked The Planets suite with Holst and it was fairly straightforward from there to St. Paul's Girls School where he composed The Planets and held the musical directorship. -

I assume xsvcx meant to post
and
I'd like a clue...

Glad I made it a toughy :)
There was a very loose half-link in my tags that I could have mentioned.
Holst was good buds with Vaughan Williams. Williams' most famous piece is probably The Lark Ascending. So I racked by brains for anything remotely bird-related in town. -

Thanks Jellybaby. Must figure out how to upload from my phone.
A clue already?! Let me think...

Good work Chung, in addition to your sleuthing factoids, the non uniform reference is because the school is one of the few in the country that does not have a school uniform.
And the link to Skully's tag was CV Stanford, who was a composer, conductor, teacher and one of the founding professors of the Royal College of Music. In 1897 he wrote a piece called 'Requiem' in memory of his recently deceased friend Lord Frederick Leighton, the original owner of Leighton House Museum. And Gustav Holst was one of Standford's pupils.
I did'nt know any of that prior to getting Skully tag, honestly this thread should be on the curriculum for London schools, its taught me more than a lot of my old school teachers.

Great info!
I love finding out about the miscellany and bits of and bobs of London that really make it sparkle. Favourite thread. Hands down. -

That's a bit of a stretch Bluefleet, there are plenty of schools that don't have uniforms, though they are becoming increasingly rare IMO. Perhaps St Paul's girls is more rare in this respect among fee-paying schools. I went to a state school without uniform (Stantonbury) as did my beloved Ms Skully (Camden SFG). I think uniforms are horrible and I'm really unhappy that my kid will have to wear a uniform when he goes to secondary, since ghere seems to be a dearth of 'liberal' schools in SE London.

BTW no-one's told us where the school is - is it on Brook Green W6?
People please post locations for old tag and clues for new! It's just lazy not to.
Wow, brilliant knowledge^! Thanks for posting this factoid.
The part of the building under the dome I photo'd is Amazing with a capital A, cool and dark on a hot day. I have never been in before, my surname is Leighton (no relation) so I felt I ought to go inside - so my tag cost me a fiver. I skipped lunch. The oriental tiles & decoration 'Lord' Frederic Leighton collected is great, as are some arts & crafts furniture & fabric. As for his art, well I liked a few of the small works there of doorways, views down streets and other architectural minutiae. The neoclassical stuff sort of leaves me cold, if only cos I don't understand the classics so it's all a bit bewildering, though I could see some lustre in the eyes of his portrait subjects that was beguiling. At the moment in the next door gallery, and Frederic Leighton's studio, is a display of some nice Persian rugs. One in particular, with an iconic pattern that I don't know the name of, is utterly stunning.
The garden at the back is lovely, so I sat in there whilst I posted.
Thankyou bike tag, you opened my closed mind up a little.
