Anyone know where to get t45 tubing?

  • Apologies if this is the wrong forum, seemed appropriate. I need some steel tubing and have been advised of t45,however I would settle for any reasonably priced decent quality steel tubing. Problem is all the places I've found that supply t45 are for aircrafts and as such seem to have large minimum orders. I need 1m of 1 1/2" ext diameter, 1m of 1" ext diameter and 30cm of bar that will fit snuggly inside the 1" tube (so slightly smaller ext diameter than the internal diameter of the 1" tube).
So anyone know of somewhere I could buy these sizes of t45? Or even these lengths of other decent steel? Preferably in London.
All for the building of a tall bike. Nice one.

  • ceeway ? possibly

  • I had a look there last night, no luck on the T45, but they do have the tubing I'm looking for in cromoloy. Maybe I should bite the bullet and use that. No luck with the bar still though, not sure where to get that.
Thank you for the suggestion though!

  • What wall thickness do you want? I've got T45 online before, but it's been for roll-cages for racing cars, so it's been chunky stuff with a 2.5-3mm wall thickness. I've never seen T45 available with a thinner wall than 16swg (c. 1.6mm) which I assume would be too chunky for your application.

Given the stresses likely to be involved, I would've thought 4130 CroMo would be fine, even without post-welding heat treatment.

  • Fair cop! Yeah I would need thinner than the wall thickness you got on your t45. This is just my first venture into this kind of thing. I'll just use cromoloy I reckon. Cheers!
