• A cyclist was killed in a road accident involving a minibus in Newbridge yesterday.

    Police are appealing for information following the fatal road traffic collision on the A472 at Newbridge.

    The collision, between a cyclist and a mini bus, happened at about 8.05pm. The cyclist and mini bus were travelling in the same direction toward Newbridge when the incident happened.

    A minibus driver has been arrested following the death of a cyclist after a collision in Caerphilly county.

    The 43-year-old driver is being held on suspicion of death by dangerous driving following the incident at Newbridge on the A472.

    The cyclist was taken to the University of Wales Hospital Cardiff but he died later.

    Gwent Police are asking witnesses to the collision at about 20:05 BST on Sunday to call them on 101.

    Officers are appealing for information to help identify the victim of the fatal road traffic collision that occurred on the A472 at Newbridge yesterday evening (Sunday July 21st).

    The collision, between a cyclist and a mini bus, happened at approximately 8.05pm. The cyclist and mini bus were travelling in the same direction toward Blackwood when the incident happened.

    The male cyclist was taken to the University of Wales Hospital Cardiff where he later died.

    Despite extensive enquiries to identify the man, officers have been unable to and are asking for anyone who recognises the description of the bike and the clothing the man was wearing to come forward. At the time of the incident the man was riding a grey-coloured Raleigh Pioneer Venture drop handled road bike. It has mudguards and fulcrum racing wheels and pannier brackets front and rear. The man was wearing grey shorts, white nike trainers and a red long sleeved Paratech top.

    The 43 year old driver of the mini bus has been arrested on suspicion of death by dangerous driving and is in custody at this time.

    If anyone has any information about the incident, or recognises the description given, they are asked to call Gwent Police on 101 and quote log number 575 21/7/13

    Out for a spin, wearing shorts, wouldn't bother with a wallet. RIP. The poor family, they don't know yet.

    As a related observation, anecdotally I see the use of handheld devices by drivers increasing and moreso beyond being used as a phone. This case clearly demonstrates a serious need for improvements to be made in enforcement.
