Is it time to start calling out bad cyclists?

  • The worst thing is pedestrians assuming no sound = no one on the road. I've nearly took out loads of people who just step into the road without a thought. How are these people still alive?

If you nearly took out loads of people who just step into the road, perhaps rethink your riding style?

  • Holy Christ. Clerkenwell. In the space of about 15 minutes driving through I saw 3 bikes undertake cars indicating left, one of which smacked the bonnet of the car daring to think a bike might wait and allow it to turn. Saw 2 bikes try squeezing between traffic - it was alright though, because those buses and cars had a duty to be utterly prescient about your bizarre manouvres. And then there was the pavement cycling.

All from a broad church. The only thing you all had in common was your fcuking attitude - a mix of "how fucking cool am I?" and "I am owed so much mutual respect from every other road user - those scum".

  • "And thanks to the advent of Strava..."

    Hehe Strava = Wanker app
Just get on your bike and ride it. Fuck all this MAMIL shit.
That's all I have to say

  • That's not a lot to say in over 13000 posts.

  • I never have much to say. But I do get annoyed with all this Strava bollox.

    Yeah!

Although I agree wholeheartedly with Mike's sentiments on this subject, I do not condone his methods and would still warn anyone who could potentially come into contact with him that he is a dangerous man and most certainly a "bad cyclist". On no account 'call him out' however, as he is known to display erratic and unpredictable behaviour involving fruit.

  • So, with a new spirit of being a better cyclist, I stopped at a yellow light at Ludgate Circus on Friday, as it was about to go red. This was followed by a small jolt, at which point I looked behind me and saw, instead of an overeager cycle as I expected, a white van with a fairly apologetic driver. Everything seemed fine, so after a quick check I biked off, only to hear a loudish bang about 200 yards down the road.
Also, I'd forgotten my wallet, oyster and wrench. Fortunately, I had an inner tube, and the staff at Evans across the road were extremely helpful re: lending me tools.

    Lessons learned:

    • don't forget your wallet
    • look behind before stopping at yellow/crosswalks
    • don't let cars drive off without getting details

No major damage done, but getting tagged from behind is profoundly unsettling, especially when it comes from nominally being more careful..

  • Glad it's nothing worse. I've heard it time and time again. Small bump, crash or just a scratch. Cyclist brushes it off and is on their way. Before long they realise their bike has a flaw or they have an injury that wasn't very obvious at first. At worse they need to replace an expensive frame or pay for many physio sessions. Always, always, take details of the people involved, witnesses and if needed call the ambulance and/or police. Later on go for a check up at your GP and look over your bike thoroughly. Be OTT about it. Obviously proportionate to the severity of the incident but do that little bit more than you think you need to. It may help you a great deal later on.

  • There was something so flagrant about the RLJing I witnessed last night it really wound me up. I was on foot, Old Street last night. Use the pedestrian crossing, lights go green for me. I spot a guy riding up to the junction and just think, "I bet he's not going to stop."

I'm fully a third of the way over the crossing and he weaves in front of me and the missus. My call of "C'mon, play fair" is met with a dismissive wave of the arm, presumably asking me to chill out as he sauntered off in the direction of Dalston.

And people wonder why cyclists get such a bad rep.

Ginger beard, black Raybans, ride a cream coloured fixie, wear a LMNH Polka Dot cap? You, Sir, are a Weapons-grade bell end.

  • ^repped for "weapons grade bell end"

  • I'll second that.

  • Wasn't me.

  • ^^ I'll third that!

  • To the guy with short gingerish hair...

    Ginger beard...

    Hmm...

  • ^^^^^^ Sometimes, when that happens to me, I feel like charging at the weaving cyclist and knocking them off with a rugby tackle or a swift kick to the bike as it crosses my path. I know it's wrong and I will probably hurt myself, but one day it will happen and I will snap.

  • Skipping reds in front of peds is absolutely unacceptable.

  • I pushed someone off their bike just today.

I'm pootling along in the cycle lane, fella on his bike on the footpath makes to join the cycle lane, he shoulder checks, I'm sure he sees me, so I assume he will hold back til I go by. He doesn't and just rides straight into the side of me. My choices are to be forced into the road or force him back on to the path. I choose the latter and give him the Froomedog handoff. He goes down in a heap. I stop to make sure I haven't killed him, he calls me something rude so is clearly not dead so I ride off.

He deserved it, but I still feel bad.

  • Probably would have been worth slowing down in case he hadn't seen you.

Pushing him over is one thing, carrying on at the same speed when you can see a potential situation is just dumb. The fact you had priority doesn't change the fact that you could have prevented the situation by riding more cautiously.

  • I raced some roadies on the way home today. They won. Wankers

  • Should have pushed them off. You probably had priority.

  • He goes down in a heap. I stop to make sure I haven't killed him, he calls me something rude so is clearly not dead so I ride off.

I'm laughing hard at this because it invoked a scene from Shaun of the Dead where Shaun ran over a zombie, stopped to check if he's not alive, and sped off once it let out a gluttering grow while exclaiming "Oh thank God".

  • Idiot with no light cycling down the dual carriageway Silk Road into Macclesfield just now, you almost caused a pileup

  • Probably would have been worth slowing down in case he hadn't seen you.

You dun good, next time he might be forcing a less capable cyclist off the path and into the path of a vehicle. Best he has a small tumble now and learns this than he continues in this way and causes a bigger problem in the future.
