I like the rugby model where only the captain can talk to the referee at which point discussion is allowed but the referee's decision is absolutely final.
Player conduct is something that needs to be addressed soon in our rulesets. I don't want polo to go down the football-route with players verbally abusing referees for every decision.
Referees are still volunteers at this point in polo so I appreciate that we should not treat them badly, we should celebrate them. But we should also consider that players are paying to play tournaments, they deserve to be reffed accurately and fairly. None of this excuses dick-head behaviour but I don't think a referee should be too surprised if a player gets a bit uppity when they realise that the decision-maker who affects their success or failure in the tournament (the referee) hasn't read the ruleset.
Someone suggested that refs should complete a ruleset quiz before tournaments. +1
