Cycling Inspiration

  • This is a thread where you can discuss who or what inspired you to start cycling whether on a fixed gear, bmx, road bike etc. My personal inspiration is my brother who rides a 80's Pearson track bike and the ease of getting from place A to B on a 8kg bike was too tempting. Anyway that is my short story, whats yours? Also I wanted to know people's different stories and inspirations because I am including some of them in a summer assignment about the advantages and disadvantages of cycling and also why people cycle.

  • I don't remember being inspired to start cycling. I was given a bike and taught to ride. The fact it was fun inspired me to continue.

  • Short and simple, perfect. Anymore stories?

  • The first time I tried crack, I accidentally kicked a toilet cubicle door off in exuberance.

  • lool, CYCLING INSPIRATION stories. Though that crack story does sound interesting..

  • Sitting on a hot sweaty bus every day for a couple of years and then enough was enough after I tried cycling one day

Tell me about it, you're just sitting there looking at all the gaps you could fit through to get through the traffic jam.

  • I was inspired to try cycling by BringMeMyFix. I soon found it wasn't really for me.

All that dystopian sadomasochism. Well, that and the crack.

  • weeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee woooooooooooooooooooooooo waaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • rush hour in london.

  • anymore cycling inspiration/motivating stories?

  • are you doing some kind of really shit, speculative research for an article/book/paper we should know about or have you just gotten bored of watching Breaking Away?

The first, its sort of a "summer" assignment bullshit about the advantages and disadvantages of cycling.

  • Sheldon Brown.

I used to cycle a lot when I was younger, my bike eventually got stolen, other things became more important. About 3~4 years ago I won some money on the lottery... enough to put towards a bike. I did some research, I wanted something simple, easy to maintain and that would give me a decent workout. I found Sheldon Browns website, explaining the virtues of SS and fixed. I bought a Marin Dominican. The day after I flipped the wheel and took off the rear brake (I figured I'd been off the bike long enough it would almost be like learning to ride again, so why not start as I meant to go on). I haven't looked back since. It doesn't look much like the original Dominican any more (bars, forks, stem, seat etc. all changed).

Although I never met the man, I was sad to hear of his passing, and still thank him silently to this day for the advice he gave me via his website. Thanks Sheldon.

Bit unethical not to say so from the get go.

Sorry, I just didn't think it mattered. Apologies, it has being changed.
