That part is a little unfair. He played for River Plate who are famously trapped in the same kind of bind that Atletico are in regards to debts and third-party ownership of their players. Given the fact that he very nearly didn't make it to Europe (he was about 23 when he signed for Porto, which is ancient by Argentinian football standards and had endured a string of injuries IIRC) who could blame him for saddling up with these guys? In fact, given River Plate's difficulties I'd wager he was under third-party ownership long before Porto were on the scene.
