what camera did you shoot that pic with ? the image is very sharp

  • With regard to shot blasting, they generally use silica 'beads' and having done a little myself, you will be fine. it's not a biggy, just remember to remove everything that is damageable. ie...bottom bracket as you have said.
Everything else is pretty straightforward, the sand or shot will leave the metal with a slight 'grain', with regard to threads and internal stuff then don't really sweat it. the blasting will only remove the 'loose' stuff ie the rust...so if it is only a surface rust then it will leave it as clean as a whistle, just remember to file and clean anything that might not be finished properly, ie casting marks, little imperfections within your lugs, small dents and scratches, though once blasted the finish is uniform all over...

ie on your lug there you can see a uniform finish that is horizontally 'lined'... you need to get rid of this, as this will show up through the lacquer when finished

Be fastidious. Anything that isn't finished at this point will stick out like a sore thumb once you have the metallic lacquer on.

and how much are you paying for seperate blasting and painting?

Armourtex charge about £20 to blast and £49 to blast and finish...

if you can get your hands on a good compressor/lock up garage, I have a spot blasting gun that works on 'normal' sand that works at about 100-120 psi that would do your frame ok. if you would like to borrow it then shout, (I'm in hackney). if you then wanted to spray it I have refinishing guns too.

  • Bike Destroyer. It cost me £300 plus materials (Columbus) which came to £230. so £520 for frameset.

dicki. i shot that using Ricoh Caplio GX8 (macro, tripod, no flash)

Wingedangel. That is really helpful and a really generous offer. Got a mate up in Stoke who has offered to spray it as he has done a fair bit plus he is a top sign writer so is gonna do my logo and lug lining work too. But thanks a lot dude anyway. Re finish; will the shot blasting fetch off the surplus brass braze on the tubes (it has all filed and emeried flush btw)?

  • Darwenian. Is that a standard frame building course that anyone can do?

  • Alas no. any engineering background?

  • looks very nice!

Normal sand is too coarse for blasting a frame. I did mine using vegetable abrasives which we used for blasting glass lenses etc. Overkill but gave a nice finish.

I would pack the BB/headtube out with news paper and any other small holes with matchsticks first.

  • I will heed the matchstick packing-out advice. Are you a veggie?:)

  • No.

I tried foie gras but the mess was too much.

  • Sorry to dig up an old thread - I am having the same problem. Anyone know of sand blasting in West London?

  • Just nitromors?

  • Haven't had the best of luck with nitromors in the past - wanted to compare with blasting!

  • there was that new guy offering a painting service in west london (name eludes me, not Senor Bear) but he might have some advice on where to get shot blasting done

  • Armourtex will media blast and put thru a paint-meltingly-hot oven thing for thirty-ish quid, your frames look brand new when you pick them up... frankly ACE.

    Congratulations!

You have won the award for most useless post of the week!

Could you explain what a 'media blast" is please?

  • don't try it on reynolds 753 or you'll go straight through the tubing !

    X Factor's push for the XMAS No. 1 ?

    stfu

guys name was radders but I dont think he does/knows who does blasting
I fail to understand however why the f you dont just google shot blasting or sand blasting in google or yellow pages, this is a really basic skill

  • because - quite clearly that didn't work and this is a forum for sharing information about bikes - a respectable option after Google/Yellow pages. Calm down.

  • Could someone advice me on how to do the following:

    Basically I've got a Colnago frame that needs re-chroming and re-paining. So how should I do it ? Shot-blast > Re-chrome > re- spray paint ?! ... Also, would shot-blasting remove a chrome from the frame ?
Could you advice me on places where I can re-chrome and how much would it cost roughly (there are plenty of threads on chroming, none of which mention a decent place of having a frame chromed).
As far as I understood; the best place for shot blasting and re-spray is Armourtex.

  • Shot blasting won't remove chrome. You need the layer of chrome plating to be chemically removed. Re-chrome first, then paint, you don't want to risk the new paint during the electro plating process.

As far as where, I don't know, you want to find a metal surface treatment company. I used to be a chromer but I don't know anywhere down here.

  • Would you be able to give me a rough estimate of how much is gonna cost me ?!

I've phoned up a place in Kent who specialize in restoring bikes. £450 for the job (re-chroming and paint) Which is a little over the top of my budget.

  • I don't know about individual prices but that sounds about right for what you're wanting doing. Search on here for Mario Vaz who does painting, he might be able to do the painting for cheaper.
