I use a 46/34 double stronglight chainset on a 107 mm bottom bracket. At the back, I use a 12-34 9 speed cassette with a shimano deore rear mech. My lowest gear is 27'' - plenty low enough for carrying an ageing fat boy and 20 pounds plus of gear up hills . I use barend shifters and the whole set up works well.
