It must be the latter, surely? However much you believe in equality, I cannot think of any other endurance sports where men and women compete together, they are different, their bodies are built differently, there's no escaping that.
But the track cycling last summer, and the road race, showed that women's cycling is easily as agressive, competitive and exiting as the men's. Good luck to everyone fighting for this.
